This ancient Hindu temple was built to worship the Sea God, Dewa Baruna a few hundred years ago. It is located on a very high rock facing the wide, blue ocean. At high tide, the huge rock would be surrounded by water. Just like in most temples on this island, only worshipers are allowed into the temple itself. However, the very beautiful scenery of the place with high cliffs, moss-covered rock formations, black volcanic sand and crashing sea waves, would be rewarding enough for tourists to visit this place. \nWhen we were there, there was a religious ceremony going on and the place was very crowded. The Balinese women in their traditional dresses and carrying trays and baskets of offerings on their head was a sight to behold. The men were dressed in white and wore a white headgear too. They performed some prayers in groups led by a priest at the base of the high rock before walking up to the temple grounds. \nTourists wandered around the base of the high rock and with the white bubbly waves rolling in, there were plenty of opportunities for some memorable photographs. It would also be an excellent place to watch the sunset. We noticed that there were restaurants situated on the high cliff on the mainland where people could dine and drink with a great view of the temple and the vast ocean in the background.\nAt the entrance of the temple grounds, there are numerous shops selling souvenirs, local handicrafts and food and drinks. The entrance ticket costs 60,000 rupiah per adult. It is definitely a place not to miss in Bali ! (2) Good view, good place, good people, good dog.. aahaaa try to be there.. you will be fall in love. From kuta or denpasar you just follow the sign of \tanah lot\".\nThe ticket entrance is cheap for the view, just a litle note, the sunset is beutiful. You have a time in bali? Visit Tanah lot guys." (3) we didnt manage to catch the sunset here at Tanah Lot, due to the cloudy evening. But still it was great experience to see the scenery. (4) The Tanah Lot Temple is perched on top of a rock cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean. But for the touristic crowds, this place would have been a peaceful meditation spot. (5) Call me naive, I certainly called myself that! Visited Tanah Lot expecting it to be a serene and mystical experience just like the photos i had loved for eons. i hadn't reckoned that what seemed like half of all the tourists in Bali were thinking the same thing at the same time. \nTanah Lot is a very busy place with loads of street vendor infrastructure you have to get through to get to the see the temples and that iconic sea vista. (6) Spent an afternoon enjoying the sights of Tanah Lot and the early evening at the kecak dance. Both well worth the effort. It is truely beautiful and fascinating place.\n\nThe only downside is everybody else knows that so it is crowded. (7) The best destination in bali and for all my friends don't asking visit in if you Not yet visit in tanah lot temple. (8) We chose to end our tour with a sunset viewing at Tanah Lot and it was definitely worth it. As the sun set in the horizon, hundreds of bats flew from outside of the caves below and engulfed the sky. It was such a beautiful sight and I am glad to have experienced it! The place itself was crowded but the area very well maintained. We were also lucky to see a bunch of locals brave the surf below. Overall a good time. (9) Had a blast around the Tanah lot temple . There à a bunch of little cafes around at the TOP of the hill where you can have some fresh juice and marvel at the ocean and the temple . Definitely recommended. It gets really busy after 4pm due to the performance. (10) Tanah lot is a very nice place to visit during evening hours. Although it is not possible to walk to the temple as it is in sea . However, you can take some good pictures from the sea shore. (11) We were told tanah lot is beautiful at the time of sunset. Unfortunately the day we chose to visit this place was cloudy. We couldn't witness the sunset. However it was an amazing experience. We spent almost 3 hours here. Also saw this man with a huge Python who said we could get a picture clicked with the Python around our neck for a price. Not too many people volunteered. But it was quite amusing to see the huge reptile in the middle of something like a picnic spot. Again they don't let you enter the actual temple unless you are a local. We met a man who promised to show us a venomous snake inside a cave for a price. Looks like people in this part of Bali are quite fond of snakes. (12) Tanah lot is really a wonderful place to seat and watch sunset. Its said that it is indeed the best place to see sunset in bali. The temple looks different in the time of sunset. Its s must visit place if you plan to go bali.it takes 1.30 min to reach from kuts beach. (13) When I reached there it was already almost dark and weather was cloudy so didn't get the see the the famed sunset of Tanah Lot, so definitely missed out for it to be on its best. Still the place was worth a visit. The cliff before the main structure is also spectacular. Although main temple is closed for entry the surrounding area and the view is reason good enough to visit the place. (14) The view is good once you reach there. \nHowever few issues with this place - \n1. You can go by online taxi but you cant be picked by online taxi when you wanna go , so if you come in 70000 IDR , you have to go back by local transport taxi in 200000 IDR or 20 SGD , they will intimidate you also and they may even chase you if they realize now you wanna go home and you may try to get online taxi by walking away from Tanah Lot area.\n2. There are many temples in Bali but similar to other temple there is no idol and everywhere its mentioned \No entrance beyont this point\", so what you actually see is just the architecture on the building which is almost similar like chinese/Buddhist temples.\n3. There is a place for \"holy spring water\" where they anoint you however they are bit rigid if you want to pass by them because they want your donation in the box before they give you a flower and anoint you (fool you in short).\n4. There is another small place which has so called \"holy snake\" but when you go there, the fake saint tells you to pay at least 5000 IDR though its not a big money but i did not have change so he dint let me see the snake lol.\n\nBetter to go Thailand rather Bali as its only traffic , loot of your money and nothing else." (15) Tanah Lot looks different depending on the time of day and weather conditions. The sea here can be quite rugged, and when it is, you get a completely different atmosphere. I came here first in 1988 and I must say it has changed a lot with the markets and memorial. Certainly worth the trip. (16) It's a good place to see the sunset and also we can watch the kecak dance. The garden, the art shop and also the car park are well organized. Love it. I have a suggestion for the future of the Tanah Lot Temple and also safe for the tourism to visit. My suggestion is needs more coast guard to watch and warn the visitors. Some visitors they don't care about the sign that placed in the risk area/danger area. Thanks very much for your time to read my review. (17) Tanah Lot is a lovely place to visit , if you go when the tide is out you get to go into the Temple , get a blessing and wash or drink the so called pure water, There are plenty of market stalls to look at , makes for a nice day out (18) We headed to Tanah Lot Temple after a day trip to Ubud . Our diver dropped us off and agreed to wait for us . \nWe had no idea that there was so many stalls and restaurants at the entrance . Was quite a little tourist hubb. Could buy just about anything here. \nYou do have to pay to use the toilet so keep that in mind. \nWe arrived around about 5.00pm and the crowds were already starting to form , quite pushy. \nEveryone being for the perfect photo. \nNot a chance of getting a photo with out 500 plus other tourists in it. Perhaps sunrise might be more peaceful option. \nWater was a little high for us to try and get out to the temple , but that didn't stop others from tackling this. (19) Tanah lot was worth the scooter ride,, stunning clifftop cafes,, was like a public garden,, not overcrowded on our visit,, would go again (20) The moment you land here, you will get thousands of tourists everywhere. But at the same time the nature's beauty will drag you to become still. Its a calm and peaceful. With evening coming closer, all cameras are waiting for a perfect click. Everyone wants to have a share of beautiful sunset at Tanah lot in his memory. the food options available here are also of variety and cheap. From Corn, fish to Coconut water, everything is tasty and worth of price. (21) Tanah Lot is a bit of a haul outside of Seminyak, but even though we were exhausted we hired a taxi to take us out to the temple. There's a lot going on (and no, the Ralph Lauren is not real - Indonesia has different IP laws than most Western countries.) But our favorite area was walking about the beach as the sun set. It's absolutely stunning.\n\nIt's difficult to understand how or whether anyone is allowed into the temple. From what we could tell it seemed to be only religious or perhaps tours. So if you're very keen on heading into the temple itself rather than just wandering the beach, exploring what's there and listening to the services from outside, I recommend doing a bit more research and potentially joining a tour. \n\nOtherwise, engaging a taxi/hotel car for the 45 minute drive from Seminyak is the easiest way to go. (22) Having an hour trip to Tanah lot temple from Kuta hotel area with all those hack traffic jam along kerobokan road will be paid off once you pass through ticket point. Entering this site will pass though many shops along the way to gate.\nOnce we pass the gate. Wow... an amazing view of south Hindia ocean are see with hole rock site. Then we able to see tanah lot temple at top of rock. Rock top temple. Known as one of guardian spirit of this island with it nine Winds direction God. (23) We were surprised to see the new Tanah Lot. The garden and pathways make the experience really enjoyable. Of course the temple itself is the main attraction but the new addition to the facility elevate it to world-class attraction. (24) The tanah lot temple was a beautiful temple, we visited it just before sunset but the sun was behind the clouds sadly, the problem with it was there were so many tourists there. But a great view! (25) TANAH LOT TEMPLE........VISIT FOR SURE IF VISIT BALI. The temple is at sea shore. Though we visited the temple at noon but spend good time with a feel good factor. Came to know how the temple body merge ( half ) in sea water at the time of high tide at night and at early morning priests pay offerings to GOD from the other portion of the temple. Normally people visit the temple at evening time to see the most beautiful SUNSET. There is a local market adjoining temple parking place . I bought lovely wristbands made by colorful beads to gift my friends and i must say....they loved them. You can also try local food at the small restaurants. (26) I visited this Temple in September. Views are superb, temple premises are super clean, though beside beautiful views, there is nothing else you can do. I Liked Tanah Lot more. Though, if decided please make sure of these points!\n1) Do not visit during day time, its really hot out here, considering the temple is on a cliff.\n2) Temple is not open for general public, its just the view you would like to enjoy out here.\n3) Make sure you wear the cloth provided by the temple. temple administration take this seriously.\n4) Ticket is priced at 30 K IDR, with no special student discount. Though, child's ticket is priced at 50% lesser then adults(didn't remember exact amount)\nEnjoy your visit... (27) Hi everyone. I'm here, in bali since 24th of June. \nAnd today i decided to visit Tanah Lot, one of the picturesce places here, in Bali. \nThe weather is much more hotter, than for example in Nusa Dua (my hotel is located in Nusa Dua). moreover, the sun is really hots. So, its required to wear long slived, light shirt. Cause you can get sunstroke. It is too easy. So, be careful.\nThe entrance is not so expensive, if i'm not mistake 20k or 30k rupiahs. The parking is 5000. So, you can pay 35000 rupiahs = 3-5 $, and can walk everywhere u want. The place is really great. The prices within the tanah lot area are high, but u can low them down, you can deal. For instance i bought \sarong\" for 30k rupiahs, but the beginning price was 80k))).\nI bought many interesting things there. \nMoreover, you can buy many souvenirs from metal, wood, material, etc. \n\nThe tanah lot itself is really beautiful. The tanah lot is located on water. The landing is very successful, and the nature over there is very cool. \nI like this place.\nAlso, i advice everyone who is visiting bali, to visit this place also. Worth its money))" (28) The setting of Tanah Lot is beautiful. It is on a rock which is submerged during high tide. We went during the evening when high tide was starting and the water was coming ashore pretty quickly. During high tide you'll be able to get pictures as you see in the postcards or online. But you won't be able to visit the temple (I don't know if there are any boats to reach it out 3 there are stepping stones). The temple due to it being as famous as it is had MANY shops and restaurants all around : hundreds of them, if not thousands !\nThe premises extend around for another couple of cliffs and offer excellent views of the sunset. Unfortunately it was cloudy when we visited and couldn't see much of the sunset. There are a lot of picture opportunities of the cliffs. Due to the vastness of the area, it's commercialisation and it's popularity, it has thousands of visitors ! When we visited during sunset, we approximated 10,000-20,000 tourists in the entire premises. It was very crowded and you cannot take pictures of the temple as you expect to see in the postcards. I would still recommend a visit to see the entire location, the cliffs and the views of the ocean. (29) This was our second visit to Tanah Lot. We first visited about 20 years ago and went to watch the sunset, unfortunately it was packed with lots of visitors and sellers and it wasn't as nice as I was hoping. This time we went early in the day and it was a completely different experience. There were very few others there and we could just roam around without the crowds and take it all in, taking photos without heaps of people in the frame. Still sellers there trying to get us to buy souvenir's but not that intrusive. \nThis visit was what I hoped it would be, relaxed with plenty of opportunities to take great photos. It is such a serene place to when seen like this. (30) There are two temple at this location, the Tanah Lot temple is to the left and another one is to the right. \nThe one on the right is set on a cliff with an arc below, which is also an incredible view. \nThe Tanah Lot can be seen from the right, but you can also get closer to the temple so that there is only ocean in the background (for photos).\nThe temple is also worth visiting during the day, but of course it has to be a perfect spot for sunset. (31) The Tanah Lot temple is one of the most picturesque and stunning temples on the island. While it is most photogenic, it is somewhat difficult to take photos without crowds of people in them. It’s is a very popular destination and I can see why. Don’t miss a visit to Tanah Lot. (32) We had a great time at Tanah Lot, not taking into account rude tourists. We arrived fairly early - around 9 - so we avoided the majority of the crowds, I think. The views are absolutely breathtaking. It was low tide so we were able to walk a little ways out into the ocean. A word of advice, just take off your shoes and prepare to get your feet wet; trying to run from the waves is silly and you could slip and fall. It's all rock anyway so your feet won't be dirty. The funny part was the tourists who were posing on a rock with a scarf blowing in the wind behind them...and a wave crashing over them - soaked them to the skin. They were done with the posing after that 😄 I give this attraction 4 instead of 5 because of the super annoying vendor that would not leave us alone, trying to sell me postcards. I didn't mind her hawking her goods at first but then she started the pressure tactics and following us around and that was just annoying. We spent an hour because we had other places to see; it went by fast but was absolutely adequate. A great time was had by all! Definitely visit Tanah Lot but go early before it gets really hot and crowded. (33) Had wanted to see sunset at Tanah Lot but it was too cloudy. Nonetheless the temple was still stunning. We were there at low tide and walked out. Good to spend some time there admiring the scenery and hear the waves crashing. (34) What’s the big deal with Tanah Lot? It’s really nothing all that incredible. The temple is extremely small. Sure it’s perched on a little piece of cliff but what’s the big deal? I didn’t get it. \n\nIt’s also extremely far away. The problem with Bali is the traffic. It takes 1.5 hours to get anywhere around Denpasar. I wouldn’t recommend the taxi ride and time wasted to see this small temple perched on a cliff. It’s just not all that interesting. (35) When one is on vacation, it's hard to time a visit to Tanah Lot at sunset as there are many other beautiful sunset spots in Bali. But there is no doubt that the beauty of Tanah Lot during sunset . Viewing the temple in the backdrop of an orange sky and orangish waters is breath taking . To enter the temple , one has to wear the traditional dress otherwise one has to view the temple just from outside. If one visits at sunset then one can stay back to watch the Kechak dance at Tanah Lot itself . (36) Tanah lot has 3 temples. We were there around 2 pm to avoid big crowds and it was just perfect(weather was nice). Peaceful place for a walk and take pics! (37) Visit at the time of sunset .walk along the sides to get stunningly beautiful beach and also the Balinese tradition at temple.\n\nShopping can be done on the road to the temple .Prices seems cheaper than Ubud market .bargain inshopping is the rule.\n\nTanah lot a must place to see (38) It is a beautiful spot to view sunset however this place now is way too comercial and less natural.\nBut for 1st time tourist, Tanah Lot is a must see (39) Tanah Lot has some great views of the temple and the sea especially during sunset. The roadside markets are a good place to bargain stuffs too. Place can get very crowded as it's on top of every tourists itinerary. (40) An absolute must-see! We hired a car for the day so we could go here and on to the sacred monkey temple in ubud with a couple of stops on the way for food and a bit of relaxation at Padma beach as well as a surf. Tanah Lot is beautiful. We took some amazing photos, had a wander and regarded it with awe. Just beautiful. Brought quite a lot of culture to our trip :-) (41) One of the most popular tourist attractions in Bali, this is a Hindu temple perched on a large rock with the background of the ocean. The setting is very picturesque and makes for stunning photographs, which is why it is flooded with tourists in the evening around sunset. Since the rock formation is slightly offshore, tourists can walk across to the temple during low tide; like all temples in Bali, the non-Balinese are not allowed to enter the temple.\n\nThe walk to Tanah Lot (from the parking area) is very commercialized and tourists have to walk through lanes packed with souvenir shops and a few coffee shops. There are also a couple of restaurants catering to visitors on the cliff top with views of the ocean and temple. (42) This is only a small temple but the veiw at sunset is fantastic. Make sure you get there early and don't leave without seeing the Kecak fire dance or you will miss out on an excellent performance. Get a seat early and you can watch the sunset while waiting for the performance to start. Great opportunity for photos and I was told that this performance is much better than the one at Tanah Lot. (43) Tanah Lot Temple is worth the trip there just for a beautiful photo of yourself with the Temple and surrounding seascape in the background as a momento of your visit to Bali. If you would like a nice photo “professionally” taken, there are photographers there who will snap a picture of you, print it out and slip it into a cardboard photo frame for you all at a very reasonable price of 20,000 rupiahs! (44) Went there twice and prefer the sunset one since the view is indescribebably good. The holy snake and holy water 'attraction' was also nice. Probably too crowded and too many tourist there so don't expect to have a good photograph there. Several small puras surrounding Tanah Lot were also nice to visit. (45) It is located northwest of Kuta. Most guided tour will make that the last stop of the day to take in the beautiful sunset. We hired a taxi for the day but did visit Tanah Lot temple around sunset. The admission is 30,000 IDR. It was worth every penny. The ground is quite extensive, but the interesting part is the rocky outcrop facing the ocean and where the temple is located. We were told that non-Muslim are not allowed to get up to the temple ground. I found that a bit puzzling because I did not see anyone allowed up there, Muslim or not. Besides walking around the beach area, there is the Holy Snake attraction. Also, below the temple ground, there is a holy water spring. For a small donation, one is allowed to splash their face with the holy water and get blessed by a religious elder. To the north of the temple is another rock outcrop with some temple structure on it. In fact the sunset of that scene is nicer in my view. After the sunset, everybody is leaving at the same time, so there will be quite a traffic jam. (46) Tanahlot was very picturesque but was spoilt by all the crowds and tacky market goods. It took a good hour on scary roads to get there so you have to work for your view.having said all this we got some lovely photos and the temple was nice. (47) Well it was not on my to see list but was on my wife's and i am very glad she took me along.\nDespite waiting a while to get yet another Sunset and the massive amount of people it was a beautiful place and worth a look.\nI note prior review that said go see the sunrise as less congested and the rubbish well Bali seems covered in it just look in any drain. Good observations and if I went back it would be Sunrise I think.\nWe were lucky to be there at a time where Low tide co-coincided with Sunset so all good.\nTake the opportunity to have a yarn with people around you as well you never know who is there. I spoke to an American, a Belguin and an Aussie :)\nYep go and have a look as this is more of the Culture and history of Bali and their dominant Hindu religion. (48) Highly recommend doing a sunset at Tanah Lot. It is very humbling watching this with 100s of other people potentially. Magical sunset.... with a choice of view points. \n\nThere are also a lot of markets for shopping. The cost to see the temple is 60,000 IDR (Adult). (49) Tanah lot is a very beautiful place that you should visit when you go to Bali,\nA beautiful view and a beautiful Sunset.😊 (50) There were truck loads of tourists coming to Tanah Lot, so what could have been a nice beach where to enjoy sunset just became a huge playground (51) Tanah Lot and another temple right next door but whose name escapes me are just beautiful, in a most beautiful setting. Two little gems sitting out on tiny land points in the ocean. Take in the beauty, get a blessing and see the sacred snakes (non poisonous). Afterwards sit back in one of the little outdoor restaurants and get ready to see a glorious sunset while you refresh. \nThis is a must see, places like this are why you travel, they stay forever etched in your mind and soul. (52) Unfortunately, when we visited Tanah Lot the tide was so high that we couldn't reach the foot of the rock. On the other hand the experience was great as the waves were crashing on the water temple which seemed like a ship floating on the ocean...\nWe decided to go early in the morning in order to avoid the traffic and the sunset crowds and take better pictures, which was a wise choice (2 hours from Jimbaran by scooter). \nThe market outside the temple is much cheaper than Kuta and has a pretty good selection of souvenirs. (53) the atmosphere of Tandjun Sari the first hotel and hystorical in Bali and the haytt hotel garden made by Made Wijaia with three different restaurant and a nice bar (54) The Tanah Lot Temple is at the northwest side of Bali which takes a long time for transportation!but when you see the sunset view with countless bats flying over your head, everything is worth to do so! (55) The temple's history and the standing rock at the edge of the beach (Tanah Lot in Indonesian) is worth the visit. But please don't believe the comments saying the best sunset view is here. (56) Tanah Lot temple awesome place to visit superb amazing and most famous temple in bali also best sunset point in bali. There is spring water below the temple. i really enjoyed. (57) It took us around 2 hours to reach a 40km distance. The traffic was intense. All the chaos on the road was testing the highest level of our patience, we were thinking of turning back to Kuta, a decision we almost took but finally we made it on time. Once we reached there I instantly knew what a mistake it would have been if we have not come here. The beauty of the sun setting behind the Tanah Lot temple is something that cannot be described in words, one has to see it to understand the true beauty of this. We were mesmerized. Sat there and gazed through the horizon thinking how could something be so beautiful. (58) Tanah Lot Temple was amazing.\n\nEntry Cost was 60,000 rupiah ($6 AUD) per adult. \n\nWe watched the beautiful sunset and there was also a dance that you could pay to watch which an additional 100,000 rupiah ($10AUD) as well. My sister was and I however didn’t watch the dance at all but I had the privilege to hold an extremely long and huge Python snake. It cost an extra 100,000 rupiah ($10 AUD) and it comes with one printed photo that one took a minute. \n\nThere was a corn dog store near the end on the left while walking towards the entry to the beach and it taste absolutely delicious. That too only cost 10,000 rupiah ($1 AUD). \n\nOverall amazing experience and a must do tour as well. \n\nI found that Tanah Lot market was a lot cheaper than most markets I have been too. (59) We visited tanah lot on our own as the trips seemed ridiculously overpriced, 350k+! \n\nWe were staying in kuta, hired a scooter and drove, it took 1 hour exactly. The price for entry is 30k so overall it cost us 61k each including scooter hire and parking!\nWe got there just as everyone was leaving, and there was a lot of people leaving! The sun was just setting and the view was beautiful. We took photos and were blessed by the keepers of the temple for a small donation. The temple is easy to get too at low tide but as we looked around the tide began to come in and the water became deep and strong when heading back to shore. those with young children be very careful! \n\nOverall beautiful place to visit and take photos and a lovely amount of, non-pushy, market stalls for you to buy bits and Bob's! Definitely go just be aware it's very, very popular! (60) Tanah Lot Temple can only be accessed at Low tide, but worth the trip even if you don't get to go out to the temple.
