(1) We went for sunrise with a tour company. When we began climbing there wasn't a soul in sight but we had our guide and a torch. As we got further up we saw more people.\n\nWe got the option to go the 'short easy' way or the 'long hard' way - the shorter way lead to the sunrise point and the long to the top of the crater. We chose the short way and were very glad we did. It was a tough climb. However the views when we got up there made it all worthwhile. Our tour guide made us boiled eggs on the hot springs, banana sandwich, fruit, tea and he had water for us for the way up.\n\nThe only bad thing about this was, after the sunrise, we went walking around to see the crater. We saw two live chickens being sacrificed by being thrown down the crater which was pretty awful. There were also monkeys who were taking an interest in the poor chickens. If you'd rather not see, tell your tour guide as they should know which areas to avoid.\n\nOn the whole, definitely recommend. The views were stunning and it was quite the achievement.

(2) Only take 2 hours climb up, and you can reach the top ! This is a light climbing, you can see the beautiful sunrise on the top with the beautiful view of Mount Agung, Lake Batur, Mount Abang, covered by the epic clouds.\n\nAlong the midnite trekking, you can enjoy the silence view of the mountain and enjoy the cold weather also the starts above you. If you do a day trekking, you can enjoy the lake view and the green view from the top also the natural farm by the locals.\n\nBatur Trekking is 98% recommended ! You should be here when you are in Bali.

(3) Me and my girlfriend did this trekking at night with a guide. And it has been one of the most magical experiences ever. Imagine seeing more than 1000 lights shining in the dark across the whole pathway up the mountain, they look like stars and with the nightsky so visible it feels surreal and then climbing for a 2h tough climb to reach the top and finally there seeing the sunrise above the clouds with another mountain across the other side. Wow!!
(4) Lovely landscape that reminds us to the forces of nature, unfortunately Mount Agung was hidden in the clouds.

(5) Having done 2 sunrise treks in Java made my own way to passur Agong temple for a civilised 9am start. Paid the necessary bribe to car park attendants to ensure my vehicle was in one piece on return. Didn't use guide as was assured track was well marked which it was. Planned on 4 hours up 3 back. Bit of a fat basterd from drinking too much beer and heading towards 60 but pretty fit having done EBC in Nepal 3 months back.\nThis track was difficult. Constant steepish to steep incline for 3 hours with no respite. Heat wasn't a problem as persistent fog and cloud cover. But after 3 hours climbing, looking up seemed like at least another hour to go , and had read that that last hour was pretty hairy. With limited visibility and getting worse ,and considering I was only human being on that mountain at the time, decided discretion was better part of valour and headed down. Glad I did. Coming down was very hard. Total concentration required on footing. Even so had 3 tumbles ,2 of them very heavy. Lucky no injuries. maybe on a clear day it would have been better. Maybe I should have started at 2am as advised ( with a guide). All in all ,Bromo and mt Ijen on Java were strolls in the park in comparison, and offered really active volcano experiences

(6) Beat the summit enjoy the sun rise . real scenic view. 1am to reach it will never make you worry. Step by step reach the top. Amazing. Fabulous. This is real Bali the paradise island.

(7) I planned and anticipated this sunrise trek 1 week before I go to Bali because this is going to be my first time hiking a volcano, even better, an active one. I booked through balivolcano.com (600,000 rupiah/person), it's slightly more expensive than Baliecocycling (480,000 rupiah/person) but this is the only company I manage to get email address to ask about details.\n\nThis trek was awesome! Unique soil and rocks throughout the trekking route makes it difficult to hike up the hill (the rocks are loose and wobbly when we step on it). Also, waking up at 1:30am and sleeping for only 2 hours makes us lack the stamina. But, nonetheless, it's worth it because when you reach the peak after 1 hr 45 mins you'll see the sky slowly turn to red and then orange and the thick cloud of sea was the most magnificent view I've seen (I've climbed 15 mountains/hills combined in Malaysia and Korea but never seen such a thick and beautiful sea cloud before).\n\nWe then went down the other longer route to view more calderas. This route has more grass, less loose rocks and the views are more spectacular, nice wide-angled view of large grass field on mountain, looking down at the wide spread of ash covering the land below, the huge lake, and the sandy slope to go downhill. It's a great experience!\n\nThe website says it's a simple hike, but I think one must have at least some experience in hiking to hike Mt. Batur to avoid injuries, because of the loose rocks (higher risk of injuries for newbie who don't know which step to set foot on). In my opinion, the longer route is a more newbie-friendly route.\n\nAnd yes, there's NO toilet/bathroom. We did it among the grass.

(8) The tremendous and phenomenal views we captured at this place are some of our best pics from this trip. The lava has made the whole landscape almost black and the mountain stands tall and majestic in the middle. This was our first time we saw a volcanic mountain and we were excited too. It didn't disappoint us. Very beautiful place.. a must go in Bali...
(9) Great location great weather awesome feel.\nA great place to be.\nVolcano can be seen.\nGood scenic beauty.\nWould love to visit again
(10) Make sure you get lots of rest the night before this. We only had about an hour sleep then the challenged began. We got picked up from the hotel at 1.30am for a 3.30am start on the climb. it took us 2 hours to get to the stop with a few break and walking slower towards the end. But once we got to the top wow. The view was awesome. Once you got to the top you forgot about all the hard work climbing up. Defiantly well worth climbing up.

(11) We did our trek with Bali Eco Tours with an early start at 0200 but if you manage to make it to the top in time for sunrise it's worth it. We had coffee and cake at the lake view restaurant before driving down to our start point at 0400. Now there are many different reviews on here about how hard the trek is, I for one found it very easy going to nearly the top and where you are given the option to go on to the summit. Don't get me wrong it is steep from about half way up with a few places of scree and large steps to negotiate and I have done a lot of trekking in my life time, if you wheeze walking to the shops this is not the trek for you. If not give it a go.\n\nNow the extra few hundred meters to the summit are hard, it is all scree and loose stone. The view from the top is beautiful, but don't think you will be the only one up there. Once sunrise was over we were came back down the the first stopping area to have a bit of breakfast. Banana sandwich and boiled eggs cooked in the volcanic steam, after which we toured the area being shown the echoing crater, temple and monkeys. It was then a trip back the way we came to the bus.\n\nThe bus then took us to the hot springs, this a an hour of my life that I'm never going to get back. If you think that the springs are going to be the angelic natural waters that you have in you mind, think again, it is set up as a few swimming pools that are in dire need of a clean. We just sat next to them and had a drink waiting for the time to arrive that we could leave. It was then back to the lake view restaurant for brunch, this was very nice and plenty to go around. The views are great and you can see where you have walked.\n\nThe tour guides were great, always waiting for the slowest person to ensure we all made it up to the first stop point, and pushing the fitter of the group to the summit. They are knowledgeable and fun to walk with.\n\nI do wonder who writes some of these reviews saying they were on hands and knees, they are super fit and found it hard. Don't be put off by these people, as even half way up you come out of the forest you will still have a wonderful sunrise view, so give it a go.\n

(12) This is a shorter route than via Besikh. The night climb is lovely and peaceful, and we had a great starry clear night for it (starting at 1.30am). We brought our own headlamps, trekking poles, water bladders and food, plus wore proper hiking gear. If you do not have this stuff make sure you go with a guide company that will provide this. Definitely don't climb without a light or a guide.\nThe climb is not dangerous but is difficult. There are parts where you are pulling yourself up over rocks, but it is doable with some hiking experience and some fitness. A good guide will watch you for tiredness. There were 3 in our party, and we got 2 guides. Unfortunately only our 14yr old son made it to the top with one of the guides. I was struck by Bali belly about 20-30 mins from the top, where we had to stop and wait for the sun to rise before we could see to safely descend. Our main problem here was getting very cold and shivery while waiting, even whilst wearing all the clothes I had brought. Going down (if you are well) is not as bad as it sound or looks, esp with a hiking pole. Bottom line : it's a great hike if you have some experience and fitness. Not for beginners. Be prepared for the unexpected on the mountain - even if you don't think you will need warm clothes, you might. Take plenty of water - we needed 2 plus litres each

(13) I enthusiastically recommend seeing Agung if you go to Bali. It's best to get to the base the night before, find accommodation, and arrange for a guide to lead you up the side in the small hours before dawn. This is quite a vigorous hike, not unlike climbing a ladder for several hours, as Agung is very steep. At the top, you'll encounter steam vents and a vague sulfurous odor, and guides will usually prepare breakfast for you. As the sun rises, people in the valley below begin playing gamelans, and this is sweet and spectacular.
(14) The tours start at 2am and you have breakfast and meet other travelers on the way to the volcano. The hike to the 1717 m height is strenuous and especially the last bit is grueling. The view at sunrise is nice and having eggs boiled in the steam of volcano is awesome. The trip back is one sleeping bus.

(15) We climbed Mount Batur to see sunrise in December. The trip was organised through Umajati Retreat in Ubud where we were staying. The trip was actually run by Ida Bagus who collected us from our hotel at 2.30am. We were a party of 4 adults and our 2 teenage daughters (13 and 14 years old). We arrived at the base of the volcano and started walking at around 3.30am. Ida Bagus handed us over to our two young guides who would take us to the mountain top. It was extremely dark (no moon) and you could not see the mountain. The first third of the hike is on a gentle incline through vegetable fields and is quite easy.\nOnce you get to the base of the volcano itself, the climb is relatively steep on a switch back path. The path is unpaved and consists of cinders and gravel you really need to make sure you have good footwear with grips. In places you will need to pull yourself up with your hands. Our two young guides were very good helping us up difficult sections and ensuring that we were ok. We could now see the line of torch lights heading up the mountain ahead of us. Unfortunately, my wife and youngest daughter were feeling sick (probably from the car ride) and could not continue so our group split into two. My wife and daughter stayed lower down the mountain with one guide whilst the rest of us continued. After about 1.5 hours, we reached the first lookout point. This is the stage at which you can see over the crater rim (you are actually climbing a volcanic peak within a much larger crater) and will provide a good view of sunrise.\nHowever, we decided to press onto the top. Although this didn't look far (again, we could see the line of torch lights heading up the peak), this was the most difficult part of the climb, very steep and quite slippery. Here the path is mainly cinders and it is like walking up a sand dune. It will take about 30 minutes from the first lookout station to the top of the volcano. There is a small hut and some benches around the crater rim. We arrived just before sunrise (it had taken us about 2 hours in total) and whilst we took photographs and watched the sun rise over Lombok our guide organised breakfast (coffee, hot chocolate, boiled eggs and hot banana sandwiches) from the hut.\nThe view is spectacular, with Lake Batur in the foreground, Gunung Abang on the other side of the lake, and behind it Gunung Agung in the distance. In the distance to the left, you can see Mount Rinjani on Lombok. After watching sunrise, we headed back down, taking some photos as we went. The route down is also quite slippery as the path is loose cinders. We stopped on the way down to see some caves, some steam vents and some monkeys all of which were ok but which you could miss if you were pushed for time.\nI would recommend that you allow yourselves plenty of time to climb the mountain if you want to see sunrise. If you are reasonably fit, it is okay but I wouldn't say it is an easy climb. Even with hiking shoes the path can be slippery so you do need good walking shoes or trainers with grips (canvas plimsolls are no good). You also need a good torch, preferably a head torch so your hands are free. It's also a good idea to take a windbreaker as it was quite cool on top of the mountain. If you are travelling from Ubud or further afield, eat something before you leave so you will not be walking on an empty stomach.\nThis was our highlight for our Bali trip and if you have the time, it is definitely worth it.

(16) I booked this hike through a reputable resort with Bali Tour Services owned by Made Sutrayasa. The hike is excellent and recommend doing it and wear good hiking shoes. BEWARE of the price. I paid $95 US when the others paid only $40 or 400k Rupiah! Made is a crook and don't use his company but rather another tour company that is honest! He told the driver to tell the other tourists not to tell the price!\n\nDon't pay more than 400k Rupiah and Don't use Bali Trip Services...\n\nI rate the actual hike a 4 but the tour company a Zero...

(17) This was the first time I’d ever hiked up a mountain... it’s was hard but so so worth it, our local guides (we had 2 because we were a group of 7 - aged between 14 & 45) were amazing and caring, I would not have made it up or down without their help & support!\n\nThe hike is steep, rocky and hard going but the view at the top makes it all worthwhile!\n\nWe did this for our daughters 21st Birthday, she wanted to see the sun up, very memorable and totally worth the effort!
(18) I booked trip To Mt. Batur through internet, contacted Jero from Bali Trekking Tour Net who has excellent reviews on TripAdvisor, he was truly excellent guy, picked up in Ubud @02.20 am by Putu & Jero then direct to mount base of volcano.\n\nJero who was my guide, perfect experienced and I enjoy it so much. Jero was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful guide and he teach me a lot of about Bali, he also suggest tourist spot I must visit in Bali during this my vacation and also gave me many tips what to do and what to see in Bali.\n\nI can strongly recommended Jero and I will engage you and your team on your WhattsApp +6281904082208.

(19) Worth the hike. Some would disagree tho. You have to walk 600 steps (half of them rocks and not an easy way to get down) and then you have to walk it all up too! Definitely a challenge in the heat of the day even if you are in decent shape. But the views and experience are so worth it!!!
(20) If you want to do something, change your life or make some challenge, JUST DO IT!\nWorth every step, every minute and every sweat! And at the top you are blessed!
(21) Waking up in the morning, 2 hours drive from Sanur, and then 1,5hrs hike up to the top of the active volcano to watch sunrise was all worth it. It is a advance hike as surface is partly sand, stones and ashes, however tour guides are amazing and many people (even bit older) made it to the top. Our guide Pande was absolutely great, funny, carrying and chatty. I recommend it to anyone, either single or couples.

(22) Awesome hike to watch a beautiful sunrise. It isn't as challenging as everyone says. If you take your time, you'll make it. There were tons of people, and since everyone is going the same way, causes a lot of traffic jams.\n\nOne major thing, a lot of the hike is on loose billiard ball sized rocks. Every step could be a slip up, but just be careful.\n\nAs far as the difficulty, i'd say its a 6.5-7/10, Camelback Mountain in Arizona or even Mission Peak in Fremont are a lot harder. The fact that you're hiking in the dark, with a loose surface, with a flashlight, with a bunch of people is what makes it more taxing.\n\nOnce you are all the way to the top, you set up shop with a little mat, and watch the sunrise. So beautiful.\n\nAfter that, we walked along the crater to take in more views.\n\nI would for sure add this to the top of your list of things to do while in Bali.

(23) OVERALL\nAbsolutely amazing and fantastic experience (!) and worth to go but you need to be prepared.\n\nGET THERE\nWith authorized guide ONLY! Don’t try to go on your own. Guide know the road go and back, you don’t and it is not easy.\n\nTIME of THE VISIT\nThey pick you up at 1AM from Nusa Dua\Benoa etc. and around 2-2:30AM from Ubut. 40 mins from\n\nGUIDE\nWith guide ONLY!\n\nHIKING PROCESS\nHere we go.\n- Breakfast. Package normally includes: 1 hard boiled egg, 2 white tosts, strawberry jam, small banana. Take care of your breakfast, order take away, you can eat it at their small restaurant cos you need energy,\n\n- Preparations. They give you light and guide. Just follow instruction and go to restroom in before.\n\n- First 20%. Very easy. You just go through some plantations of tomatoes, onion, sometimes there are stones….quite okay, but here you start to sweat,\n\n- Then 30%-70%. It becomes difficult. I removed my jacket as I was very hot due to activity. You hike on lava stones that are sometimes sharp, sometimes slippery and very slippery, big lava stones that are unstable and could fall down…you need to be careful, also you can help yourself with you hands, guide also will help you if you need.\n\n- Last 30%. Extremely hard. Why? Because you already hiking like more than 1,5 hour, almost non-stop, with backpack (at least water you have there)…..everybody try to rush cos sunrise is coming and you got INCLINE of the mount about 60% (!). That will last about 20-30 min.\n\n- SUNRISE. Absolutely fantastic and amazing!!! Take as much pictures and videos you can, your guide will help you as well.\n\n- VOLCANO. After sunrise go around and see it from all the points, the view is incredible (!) but be careful about monkey as they want to steel your food and everything thought. GO further down and see active part of volcano (you can warm up there as it is like souna), explore different part on of the top.\n\n- GO DOWN. It’s easier but also takes about 2 hour. However you need to be careful as well as mount is quite tricky. BUT THE VIEW at each step is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING AND UNFORGETTABLE !!!\n\nCONCLUSION: 2 hours up, 1-2 hours on top, 2 hours down. Hard!\n\nThis is almost NON-STOP, we have rest like about 4 times for 3-5 mins to get our breathe back and follow the others as everybody is going the same way so everybody need to be on top before sunrise to see it…..so you must move or stop aside.\n\nDRESSCODE\n- You should understand that it is NOT EASY (for those who does fitness less then 3 times a week like me) but possible,\n- Hiking shoes or at least your Nike from gym. Please do not spoil your city Lacoste as I did (((\n- Jeans I would not recommend. It is a very good protection from lava stones if you scratch or fall but it is very difficult to do hiking. Put something stretchable and fast drying but also that could give you enough warm on the top,\n- MAX backpack you can bring is like 3-5 kg, half is water. DON’T bring big backpack with a lot of staff, it’s impossible to go with it,\n- You definitely need wind protective jacket,\n- And hat or hood on your jacket.\n\nKIDS\nMake sure your kid at least 12-15 y.o. as I’ve seen daddy climbing with a daughter of 12 y.o. on the back…..Think 3 times in before.\nAnd you will be need to hike down….Think!\n\nPRICE and PAYMENT\nPrices varies quite a lot. 350K to 700K, what every you choose but the process is absolutely the same. Ask your hotel, maybe they have good connections with some companies and they could offer better price.\n\nTIPS:\n- Be careful with your close, this is very important point. When you hike its hot but when you are at the top it is super windy and cold,\n- You can get hot tea, drinks on the top, price was about 40K for tea from teabag,\n- Bring water,\n- Check with your hotel for cheaper price,\n- ENJOY!

(24) The view from above is amazing, but after the climb it's even better! Don't mistake the claims down, it's hard! But worth it!
(25) We started trekking on 3am. For me it was an amazing experience. It's hard to me to climbed. I just finished my trek at first post and not to try to climb the top. But you can see the magical sunrise view from here. It was worth it. Please check the weather.
(26) The view for this mountain is awesome but the place is not so cold as i read in the internet. However there is a lot of disturbance from the local seller who will disturb you to buy their products till you loose your time to stand and watch the view.

(27) We went here on a trip where we climbed Mt. Batur in the middle of the night to experience the sunrise in the morning.\n\nWe were picked up at our hotel at 3 in the night (in Ubud) and where at the foot of the volcano at 4. We started our climbed at 4 and were at the top at 6 and the sun was up at 6.30.\n\nIt was warm to climb it so there we only had a t-shirt and long trousers on. But at the top it was cold and I had a t-shirt, fleece and a windbreaker (running jacket) on with my long trekking trousers, hiking boots and running gloves and a thin running hat. That kept me warm.\nAt the top there is no seating, but at the second top there is a small cottage with benches in the front with view over the lake and mountains - tip: they are wet so bring a plastic bag to sit on.\n\nWe had an ok sunrise - beautiful colours but unfortunately the clouds came in when the sun was supposed to be visible. But a great trip and worth the while.

(28) Hey there\nI have been to Bali many times. During my recent stay my friend and I needed to exchange Australian dolllars and did so at an \Authorized Money Exchange\" who advertised no commission\n\nThe money was counted in front of us and placed on the counter.\n\nLucky for us i recounted the money only to find it was substantially short\n\nWhen I questioned this the seller took the money back and recounted the correct amount\n\nWith over 30 years cash handling experience i was baffled at how i could have miscounnted. ..so i recounted and again it was short!!!\n\nI decided not to go ahead and walked away. After speaking with other travelers they also had this experience.\n\nIts a scam and its like magic...like professional card players the money disappears in front of your eyes.\n\nOnce the money is counted for you...hold it in your hands and recount it and then DO NOT LET it go....not for a second as they are so quick!\n\nThey will try to distract you by asking you for change saying that they don't have any...walk away as the legit mkney exchange has chsnge\n\nThey lure you in by offering a better rate\n\nSafe travels all"
(29) Make sure you have a guide and dress in layers! Watching the sunrise from the top of the world is breathtaking and pictures don't do it justice. Bring lots of water and a flashlight too. There is food at the top but you might be better off to pack your own snacks. Definitely recommend doing the hike, worth waking up at 0200 for sure!
(30) We did this during our stay in Abud & getting up at 02.00am was well worth it.\nWe took a private tour to avoid climbing the volcano in a large group. The guide was very friendly & knowledgeable, he’s suggested using a different route that was slightly more challenging but quicker & avoided the mass of other groups.\nThe climb took us just over 1.5hrs to reach the summit & on doing so the views were breathtaking.\nWe were treated to our breakfast upon reaching the summit by our guide & managed to take lots of unforgettable photos.\nWe’d like to thank our guide Buddy for a truly memorable experience.\n

(31) We have been on Batur Village on Bali because we will trying Trekking on Mount Batur so before we Trekking we meet local People round our stay close by Lake Batur and we got it information about Trekking time, we know that Mount Batur is not high like Mount Rinjani Lombok , Mount Batur is 2000 meter from the feet above lake Batur so event Trekking take not many hour, just 2 hour or 2 an half hour will be arrive on view point, You must careful on the Village because there sell budget cost little expensive. We was stay on Resort Apung, to compared with other Hotel is Apung Resort more comfortable, the room was clean but the problem some time the water from Toilet doesn't working so this is the problem, Apung Resort also serve Lunch and dinner because have restaurant too, please if you would like try trekking Mount Batur better coming on Summer time and then the time is early the morning at 06:00 am or 04:00 am not see the Sunrise doesn't matter but the important is the View between Lake Batur & Mount Agung. event see the view point Batur also you can visit public cemetery Kampung Trunyan, very spectacular but if you afraid do going there, because the bodies were buried just put under the tree,I wonder, does not smell corpses, this is already the culture traditional Truyan Village.
(32) I'm very disappointed with this tour , because u must pay 500.000 rupees when u travel alone en as a couple 300.000 rupees per person. But on the ticket they write 100.000 , this I call corruption !\nit was a wonderful inspiration to climb mount batur but we did not see sunrising .
(33) Worth waking up at 2am to make drive to the foothill at 4am. About 2 hours take you to the peak for sunrise spectacle. Loose rocks near the summit a bit tricky but not too difficult or dangerous. It was cloudy on that day so we were not rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise but the caldera and surrounding kintamani view is still very good.\n\nMinor grouse is that near the beginning of the trail, they have converted for small farming and lots of flies there to welcome you on descent.\n\nClimb a volcano -- good to tick off the bucket list.
(34) After a 2 hours walk during the night, you get the chance to have a great view on mount agung and the lake.\nThe view is splendid and the panorama terrific. The guides cook your breakfast directly on the top of the hill.\nThe walk can be a bit intense but it's definitely worth it
(35) Began the trek at 4am and while it was cold to begin (~16 degrees), I quickly warmed up trekking up the mountain with a flashlight! Took us about 1.5h up and another 1.5h down. Be careful when descending - it's a lot more dangerous as the terrain can be very slippery at times - our guide advised us to step sideways which was very helpful! I had great guides too - who were very conscious and took care of us as well as the mountain (cleared rubbish that they saw along the way) so please clear up after yourselves! The views were absolutely breathtaking on a clear day - think a night sky full of stars & an amazing sunrise! A small tip - bring some food for breakfast up & share the bread provided by the tour agency with the monkeys instead!

(36) I had a great experience with Pineh for my Sunrise trekking. I had done a lot of research and read up reviews on the main compaines. There are 3 or 4 companies the street vendors sell trips for and then a couple of others that are more catered for private tours, min 2 ppl. As I was a solo traveller I needed a group. The driver Sam arrived promptly at 2:15am at my Resort in Ubud. And Komang the trek guide was the sweetest guy and so attentive helping us along the way ensuring we were all okay. It was only a group of 5 of us which I was pedantic about checking when I booked it as I'd read other reviews saying they were told a small group then it was 10-13 with only 1 guide etc. You need the help so it was comforting having him there (once again traveling alone with no partner or buddy to help you). So yes like most have said it is a challenge. Way up - gets quite steep and you don't know what's around you which is actually an awesome surprise for the journey back down. We walked under a star lit sky, I had to keep stopping to take in the beauty. You finally get to the top and you sure are sweaty!! So I suggest layering up so you can shed/de-shed layers. Once you get to top take off the sweaty layer and put on warm clothes. Worth Also bringing a towel to use whilst hiking and to sit on up top. We got lucky and had an amazing sunrise. You then walk around and have a look at different points of the volcano you also feel the hot steam from the volcano which is really nice. The way down is quite slippery, much like snow powder (but black ash instead) but a whole different experience to to the way up as you now have amazing views. Such a great experience all up but you need to be fit, strong and agile as it is hard work on various levels. I go on hikes/treks fairly regularly and do reformer pilates and yoga and this was pretty hard for me. You need strong legs to climb up and stamina also. You can take breaks as you need though, id just suggest older people or less fit do a private tour where you can go at your own pace and not pressured to rush. We had a fit group and were all happy going at a fairly fast pace not stopping too much. It's just such an amazing experience and like nothing I'd done before. Combining various things I love - trekking/hiking, adventure, nature, sunrises, picturesque views.

(37) This is the 1st time my and i went trekking, let alone trekking in the dark. But i don't regret every seconds of it. We started very fast and furious until we had to slow down because one of my friend needed more breaks..but we never complained. Instead, we gave him motivations all the way and made sure he made it to the peak together. We pushed him non-stop from the 1st point to the peak. I think if he was more fit, we could easily reached the peak under 2hrs. Anyway, our guides were great. As there were 7 of us, we had 2 guides..one is Diana, the other is Jaden. While we were \pushing\" our colleague, they joined in by singing, cracking jokes and cheering. Not even once did i see them without smile on their faces. Of course they were knowledgeable. Last but not least,my friend who needed more breaks told us at the peak of Mt Batur, he said he regretted for not exercising at all. Nice view at the peak, we certainly enjoyed our climb although the sun didn't came out on Wed 2/3/2016 morning @0620hrs. And we paid 500,000IDR each. Till next time!"

(38) Climbing Agung is not for everyone! We totally underestimated it. It was so, so hard, but the view and the sunrise were incredible.\nFirst of, our guide was fantastic! Months before we travelled there, I contacted Wayan Widiyasa (wayan.idguides@gmail.com), whose name came up a lot on the internet. We decided to go for the longest climb, from Purah Besakih to the summit, price was 850.000 Rp for 2 people. Wayan did not guide us himself, he belongs to a collective with 28 local guides. Our guide's name was I Gede Mundut Aryana, and he was amazing (can be contacted through the same emailaddress). He stopped at all the right spots, feeling when we needed rest. Especially on the way down (which was maybe even harder than up - it certainly felt much longer), he helped me out a lot. I could not have done it without him!\nThe climb was, as said, hard. The path is basically just a straight line from the temple to the top. Nothing like European mountain paths. It was steep, climbing with hands and feet (and ropes) at times. It's about 6-7 hours to the top. Then, you take the same path down. Which took us about 5 hours as well (mostly because of me, my boyfriend could have done it faster). Wear good trekking shoes to get a good grip on the surface (it gets slippery, especially after rain). Bring layers of clothes, it gets cold at the summit. And bring enough water and snacks.\nIf you are an experienced climber, and/or are very physically fit, this is definately an interesting trip. Don't underestimate it though!

(39) Went as a family of four, two adults and two kids, 17 and 19 years of age. We went from Pura Pasa Agung temple. The first 300 steps to the temple was not a problem. We spent almost 2,5 hours trekking upwards before we cleared the vegetation. Adults gave up at 2500 meters, but the kids went to the crater rim with our guide. We used Nyoman Mukti, phone +62 852 38548412. He was great in every way, polite, strong, patient and really trustworthy. We felt safe all the time with him as our guide.\n\nFrom the crater rim and down to the temple the kids used 1,5 hours.\n\nClimp is indeed hard, going upwards in a straight line, no turns. Having said that, with some trekking experience it is doable. Reason that we had to stop was back/knee trouble that occured beforehand.\n\nThe nature and surroundings are breathtaking, also the view.\n\nWe also did Mt Batur, that was really, really easy compared to Agung.

(40) one of the best place for traveling destination in bali is \ mount batur \"\ngreat sunrise, fresh air, beautiful nature, and friendly people around...\nnice place for treking and enjoy the unforgetable adventure trip."

(41) we took the midnight trek up-to the peak to see the sunrise. We very lucky to be able to see the sun rise from behind Mt Agung unhindered by clouds. The view was quite nice. I am dismissive of sunrise and sunset points as I think of them as a gimmick to lure tourists. But the midnight trek was fun. The trek during the day might get too hot and you may get lost if you go on your own. The destination by itself is nothing special. The sunrise is like any other sunrise behind a mountain. And the sun rises on the day you go like it rises on any other day. Proper footwear is highly recommended. I have weak knees with reconstructed ligaments, and I felt the my light trainers offered insufficient grip on the rocks. There were people in flip flops though who kept slipping on the rocks but who still managed to make it through the trek. I would say hiking shoes are not required, but heavy, hardy running shoes with a rubber sole meant for running outdoors would be enough. Go here if you get excited by sunrise views, or if you'd like to try a trek in the dark.

(42) Started the trip at 2am, we arrived to the bottom of the mountain at around 4am. It was quite challenging to climb up the mountain but it was definitely worth coming! When we finally arrived to the top of the mountain, we felt amazed with the beautiful views there. Boiled eggs and bread were provided. Watch out of monkeys nearby!

(43) Beautiful early morning walk for sunrise delight. A challenging few hours but perfectly achievable if taken at the right pace. Always satisfying at the top! We hired a guide but this was not necessary as we took a packed breakfast with us.

(44) Amazing experience to climb to see the sunrise but like every other review says, it's standstill traffic for literally hours. Incredible view, but you'll be sharing it with hundreds of others.\n\nI'd read heaps of reviews and thought I'd be prepared, not so much.\n\nHighlights:\n\n- It really is a stunning view for a good chunk of time once you reach the summit. It's not a case of \walk up, take a few photos for Insta and wander back down\", you see some incredible changes in light and colour. I was fortunate to have fantastic weather as well.\n\n- The guides are friendly (like all Balinese) and incredibly helpful when it comes to helping you up and back down. I'm sure all tour companies are similar\n\nReality checks:\n\n- You are nose to tail the *entire* way, from the drive to the base to walking all the way to the summit. We tourists, we really do ruin everything... Our guide told us more than 500 people climb a day.\n\n- If you haven't done any regular exercise in the last year or so, it's not going to be a walk in the park. There are some clambering sections and given that it is so crowded, not everyone understands etiquette and they are looking out for their own safety, you really do have to concentrate. It's a solid two hour climb and probably an hour return.\n\n- It's dark, take a head torch!\n\n- The guides go at a pretty reasonable pace, and it's consistent. Be prepared to not be the dawdler in the group, however, the guides are incredibly generous with stops and checking on everyone.\n\n- Wear good clothing and shoes, so important. It's loose gravel, dirt and pointy rocks of various sizes all the way up and back. It's not a \" jeans and Converse\" kind of activity so if you didn't pack anything active, you're gonna have a bad time. I underestimate how cool it was at the base and the summit, so wear a hoodie and be prepared to carry it once you need to strip it off.\n\n- There will inevitably be some idiot with a drone or a speaker blaring awful musing (as there is at every tourist attraction) ruining the serenity at the top or along the path. Be prepared to be in a crowd, just a dark, trekking crowd.\n\nIn all honesty, it's quite incredible at the top and you feel quite accomplished when you're done!"

(45) Booked a ticket through ubud sunrise hiking online. It was in the early morning when a nice driver pick me and my partner up. Through the darkness we were delivered safely to a car park where we were met with our mountain guide Nik. He is a certified mountain guide with many years of experience climbing Mount Batur. We were equipped head light, water, walking stick and off we went. We reached the peak with no problems. Nik went off to prepare our breakfast of boiled egg, coffee/tea and some bread/biscuit while we took pictures. It was a pity it was too cloudy to see the sunrise but it was nevertheless a unforgettable experience. Do it. You won't be sorry.

(46) One can enjoy the scenic beauty and pleasant weather of moynt batur here. Strategically placed woodden restaurants offer lunch wbich is generally a lavish spread of Balinese cuisine.

(47) Worth the crowds, in my opinion. Go and take the pictures. I am in my 40s, don't take kindly to heat with hi humidity, and had an intense sunny hike the day before....so I did not climb down far enough to get to the craziest part of the climb down, BUT good news is, you can see how you feel and turn back whenever you think \none of these kids in flip flops will carry me back up, will they? Hm.\" Before you get to the super crazy part just know the stairs get steeper as you head down too.\nConversely, you can get the higher views and head up... If you're taking each other's pics, watch your bags-- monkeys! A few donation spots higher up as well where you can climb into platforms for pics. We saved our money for a cold drink!"

(48) One one end an active volcano, on another a beautiful lake! Where else in the world do you get such beautiful views? Our tour guide ensured we got a great view from the parking lot of a hotel there. Would strongly recommend not to throng the same gallery from which everyone is trying to get pictures and keep going further up the road. We did not do the climb (you have to get up at 2 AM to do that), but we came up in the car, but the views were as rewarding. Later, we spent time at the scenic Lakeview restaurant, which gives an amazing window into the Mount Batur beauty.

(49) Before I went to Bali this was one of the things I planned to do. I was lucky to have ideal conditions - not too hot or cold, no wind, some cloud to give the sunrise colour but not so much it covered the sun.\n\nThe first part of the walk is a very gradual incline from the lower car park, then there's a moderately steep section to the lower viewing area which can be a bit slippery. The last 80 metres of elevation which is slippery and steep enough that you might need to put your hands down for support a couple of times. Coming back down this section you might find you're skiing through very loose black sandy material (shoes will fill up with dust). The entire hike from the lower car park to peak and return is about 7.6km and less than 600m elevation difference. An app on my phone tells me that was less than an hour of moving time versus about 3.5-4 hours of pausing to allow rest (and taking in the sights, obviously).\n\nI am reasonably fit and didn't find any part of the ascent or descent challenging but there were a surprising number of people who struggled. As with any hike, take some first aid gear, sufficient food and water for the possibility of being delayed (although some tours will provide breakfast and people sell drinks near the top). You will need lighting if going to see the sunrise (possibly provided by your tour) sturdy shoes, enough layers of clothing to protect you against the variations in temp/wind/rain and a camera to capture some memories. The coldest part for me was riding my scooter from Ubud but most people take a bus from their accommodation. If you do ride, beware the slippery dust on some of the steep, winding roads as you descend into the outer crater area.\n\nI intended to just walk solo up the path that everyone else was taking but after being accosted by guides I relented and joined two other hikers and a guide. The opening price of US$90 was rejected and I handed over 200,000IDR (approx US$15). The guide had some interesting information and the French couple were very nice and offered to share their photos with me so I'm happy with that. During the ascent our guide took on a couple of others from a group who had injured people. Unfortunately, these two were far slower and we ended up only getting to the lower viewing area in time for sunrise - still spectacular but not what I intended. After taking in the spectacle from that vantage point I continued up the last 80m or so to the peak. From there I would have liked to have followed the ridge around the crater (about 2km return) but time constraints worked against me.\n\nAll in all a great experience but I would do it a little differently if I were to go again.\n\nWhen you're done with the mountain, the hot springs around the base are a great way to relax those muscles.

(50) Get up at 2AM, reach the location, meet interesting people and hike with them this 2000 Meter high, still slightly active Volcano.\n\nTips - Wear runners, keep a jacket as it gets really chilly at the summit. Don't stop at the common view point, hike another 200 meters up and see a much better view. That would be difficult as it is all loose volcanic soil but worth it. See the pics!

(51) So, I like to think of myself as relatively fit as I am a weekly power walker, have climbed Wayna Picchu in Peru, etc. but this volcano got me. I have a hard time hiking uphill and no one told me that this hike was straight uphill, with no break. About 1/3 of the way up, while I was gasping for air, I finally left our guide and my friend and sadly opted for the easy way out of having a motor bike drive me to almost the top and dropped me off there to wait to meet up again with our guide and my friend. We then all hiked up the last 15 minutes from the motor bike drop off point to the summit in time to see the sunrise. Such a beautiful site watching the sun come up, we both loved it.... We remained up at the top for about an hour to an hour and a half, soaking in the views and taking photos. Then started the descent back down, which was no problem whatsoever for me, in fact I ran a great part of the trail down. So just a word of warning, if a non stop uphill hike is something that is difficult for you, or you suffer from asthma, I would consider taking the motorbike up, once you are out of energy, as the sunrise is so very beautiful at the top. I also saw some others that needed to catch a motorbike up to the top as well, but most made it up there with no issues, granted I am in my 50's and was probably the oldest one there attempting this, everyone else looked to be in their 20's and 30's max. And remember to negotiate for the motorbike ride up there, I payed a ridiculous amount of $$$, not negotiating, stupid me, but at that point, I just did whatever it took to get to the top, haha!!! Have fun and enjoy!!

(52) First time climbing batur. The day was cloudy and seems like our driver had a deal going on with the guide, but we were too tired to nitpick. The way up to Batur was dark, and rather strenuous. We are considered fit, and we climbed all the way to the peak with 2-3 rest stops. Caution to pick a sunny day. Our guide, Gede, was really sweet and patient.

(53) This was a highlight of our trip to Bali. We were collected at 1.30am from our hotel. We opted for a private tour so had our own guide for the walk, which cost $70 USD each. This seemed to be fairly standard pricing from what we could gather. The walk itself was in complete darkness but you are provided with a torch. The path is full of loose rocks / slippery areas so decent walking shoes are needed. It becomes steep at times when nearing the summit but totally worth the effort. The sunrise we saw was beautiful. You get a simple breakfast at the top of My Batur (including boiled eggs that were awesome as hand warmers!) and can purchase tea/coffee if you want. It’s quite crowded at the top but plenty of room for good photos and uninterrupted views. It was cold while waiting for the sunrise so bring something warm!

(54) And even a non-Hindu can see why. As you ascend the trail, you will walk past temples and the woodland trail is lined with Balinese umbrellas. The view at dawn from the 1,700M summit is stunning as you overlook the larger Mt Agung in the distance.\n\nYou can also see the black lava field from the 1963 eruption and the view over Lake Batur is amazing. Bring some pocket money to buy drinks at the summit.

(55) Being picked up from my hotel in Kuta at 2200hours. The driver is on time. Arrived at Mount Agung park around 0000 hours. Before the hike, my guide performed a ritual for safe journey up. Started to hike up around 0035 hours.\n\nThe sky was clear that night, I can see shooting stars (5 times I think). Be reminded to bring your medication as the air up there was dry, lucky that I bring along my asthma inhaler everywhere I go.\n\nMy guide Wayan Botak was very friendly and motivating. It was worth the money!\n\nAll the sweats and efforts for 5 hours paid when the sun rises. It was beautiful and amazing.\n\np/s Crazy decision made that went amazing and wonderful. As a recommendation bring along wet tissue, Sanitizer, Dressing pad, 2 liters water. Headlamp (extra batteries) Sweats/candies (for energy0, light fleece and parka

(56) DO NOT SUPPORT THE MOUNTAIN MAFIA.\n\nWe decided as a group to take a taxi to the volcano and do the easy trekking by ourselves. As previous comments reveal - not possible due to the mountain mafia.\n\nWe got harrased, verbally and physially abused by the ignorant inbreed mountain mafia portraying to work for the government. Pushing around women half their size and yelling at their faces. Discusting.\n\nThey had even a self-printed \government padge\" that they showed for 1 second before hiding it. I asked to have a closer look to check the details and ofcourse I could not do that without aggressive shouting about me disrespecting their country. Wow. Was able to see that it was definately something made in the next door garage.\n\nYou can go to the mountain by purchasing a over priced tour. I would not recommend anyone supporting this mafia activity. You should not have to pay for a sunrise!\n\nPs. Pictures are taken from the village next to Mt Batur. As beautiful sunrise. No mafia."

(57) A must visit place. Sunrise from the top is beautiful and very peaceful. Just a light sweatshirt is enough. Trekking is not very difficult but can get little tiring for beginner's but the view from the top is worth.\n

(58) Today i along with my indonesion wife and her sister decided to visit mt agung. We arrived and bought tickets and then we went back to the car to get the camera and then handed over the tickets to get in to see mt agung but behold they or can i say a very arrogant balinese said you can not go in as you need to pay for a guide to go with you , well we did not need a guide as i just wanted a few pictures but no they said we could not go in unless we hired a guide , by this time my wife had had enough and said we don;t want a guide and as she said it was not that we had to pay or the money but we did not want a guide and they needed to respect this decision as we had paid our entance fee. This is not the first time i have heard this and the balinesse need to learn that there island survives because of tourists . We continued on our journey to lake batar and funnily no more problems but a lot of nice balinesse people to deal with. I must admit i was shocked by what i saw and the treatment of my indonesion wife by this arrogant man and also my wifes sister and myself. Please be aware of this when you visit mt agung as i guess most tourists would just say after been treated like this yes i will pay a guide after coming 2 hours from kuta, i admire my wife for sticking to her guns .

(59) Definitely recommend the sunrise trek!!\n\nBUT be prepared, its rough terrain and quite long and steep! You need shoes and if you don't want to fall over on the way down you need good shoes.\n\nIf you go with a tour group:\n\nYou are supplied with water and two tour guides to lead and tale the trek. The guides were great and helped out heaps.\n\nWe had a really nice driver pick us up and drop us off in a nice car.\n\nPart of the tour also gives you a breakfast and that was also delicious and came with an excellent view!!!

(60) Super nice. Take good shoes. Hot cocoa served at the top. Go with a guide because you have to move around in the dark. Amazing sunrise |
