(1) This attraction is quite far from Seminyak(where i was staying) but as one of the few places in the world where you can literally have lunch while sitting on the edge of the caldera of a dormant volcano this is one thing i think no one should miss.\nThere are numerous restaurants on the crater all serving wonderfully varied and delicious buffet lunches at very reasonable prices. That said the view alone is worth the price.\nVisted in december 2013 reviewing it late!

(2) My husband and I went on this trek which was stated as slightly challenging but since we are ok in terms of fitness, we booked it. We were also going to the hot springs afterwards.\nWe booked it with GYG and when we got there it was pitch black and we were given torches. There was a squat hole toilet at that point but that's it. We walked through farmers fields and it started off ok, however, after a short while it became very sandy and gravelly and was very difficult to walk. At that point the slope of the hill started to increase to eventually a 45-30 degree angle (for 1.5 hours of the 2 hour hike) I would say and this was a mixture of sand (which was very hard to walk on, never mind climb) and rock climbing where I felt sometimes I was going to fall backwards. The view at the place we stopped that was of the sunrise was amazing. I have to say it was breathtaking. The descent was also breathtaking but for very different reasons. Imagine trying to descend 30 degree slopes made entirely of sand and gravel... I fell twice and cut myself and twisted my knee and the guide did nothing and didn't show any concern at all. By the time we got down we were incredibly exhausted, traumatised from the ordeal of walking down (and up - even though we couldn't get to the summit) so much so that we couldn't face going to the hot springs, we just wanted a shower back at our hotel and to collect our thoughts. After researching this, I found out the main route the tourists are supposed to take, is a simple hike with a flat area half way with a coffee shop etc. This made me so mad because it was what I was looking forward to the most on our honeymoon, 17 hours away from home and the experience was ruined because whichever company GYG chose, took us up the wrong way.\nIf you want a (very) challenging hike, go the back way, however, if you want to make it up there to the top and see the view, the main tourist way is best.

(3) We went to a restaurant overlooking mount natur and visited natural springs. The places overlooking mount batur are so dreamy and peaceful.definitely staying in a resort overlooking mtbatur next time we visit bali.

(4) The lonely planet says: a major obstacle is avoiding hassle of the guides, when climbing up the vulcano. This is an UNDERSTATEMENT. As long term travellers we were used to pushy guides. But this was a whole different experience!\n\nAfter strollig through Toya Bungkah for 2 minutes, we were stopped by a guy who did not allow us to walk any further. We didn't even want to go up the vulcano since it was already late.\n\nAfter an argument, the guy started chasing my boyfriend with the moterbike and throwing rocks at him. Two other tourists tried to calm him down (we asked them for help), but he was psychotic. He called his to join him. When we visited the local police, they did not do ANYTHING, as they are part of the game. The only way to avoid further trouble, was to flee the town as soon as possible, while still shaking from fear. Although I am a long term traveller, this was by far the worst experience.\n\nPlease do not go to this vulcano and sponsor the local maffia. There are many more nice vulcanoes in Indonesia.

(5) People in good condition can do the hike through perseverance, but the real question ought to be whether 15 minutes of a nice sunrise and view are worth the seven-eight hours of rather hard climbing.

(6) We started our journey from the hotel at 3am. We arrived at the base of Mt Batur by 3.30am and soon started the climb. At the base of Mt. Batur we met our lady guide who was very patient and gave us plenty of stops if we needed one. Just make sure that all the stops won't delay you from reaching the top before sunrise. We were also given each a torch light as it was very dark when we started the climb, you will need that and also good pair of walking/trekking shoes because there are a lot of small and big stones as you climb.\n\nThe first hour was an easy climb until the 2nd hour which was a bit tough. You'll definitely need a good pair of walking/trekking shoes. After an hour of the climb there is one stall selling drinks like water, Pocari sweat, Coca Cola and what nots, so you don't have to worry about having to carry bottles of water, even at the top of Mt Batur there are locals selling drinks, tidbits ,hot coffee and even hot chocolate.\n\nIf you perspire quite a fair bit, it's good to bring extra clothes and a hand towel. We reached the top at about 520am, there are plenty of sitting area but as more people reaches the top there will be limited sitting area and that's why we brought along our foldable chair (Helinox). Soon after we were served with our breakfast box which includes 2 buns, 1 orange , 1 hard boiled egg and a bottle of water. We decide to have hot coffee and we paid about USD 2-3 i think and it was in a long glass, didn't quite finish it as there was no milk. We waited till sunrise and the view was very spectacular, but the weather was a little misty so the view was obstructed a little bit. About 645am we started to descend and it wasn't as hard climbing up.\n\nWhile you are climbing up, please bear in mind that there are no toilets but as you make your way down we come across one toilet and thank you for that! Entrance fee is about IDR10,000 about just a few cents. No toilet paper but there is water. The scenery down also has a nice view and good for taking pictures. Overall we enjoyed the climb, we do see seniors who made to the top of Mt Batur and if they can do it, so can we!

(7) I climbed Mount Agung with my husband, son and his wife along with two experienced guides Kadek and Nyoman. I am 67 years old and my husband is 70. I will not under estimate the challenge but the reward of accomplishing it is amazing. We were shocked however by how much trash was left on the mountain. Yesterday my son Matt along with the two gudes Kadek and Nyoman went back up via Pasar Agung and picked up every piece of trash they could find. They brought down fully packed extra large garbage bags full of plastic bottles etc. The lower level was cleaned by my husband and friends. I implore you- this is a sacred mountain and a beautiful part of mother earth- DO NOT LEAVE ANY GARBAGE ON IT! Pack it in and pack it out. If you see anyone littering say something to the. Mount Agung is precious and beautiful- let's all keep it that way.

(8) I hired a guide from Wayan, he has a group of guides who are all very professional. It cost me rp 650,000 for the trekking and rp 700,000 for the transportation two ways from the hotel and back ( it is really far and took me 2 hours journey one way ). In general the guide is very friendly and helpful. Although I didn't really reached the top of Mount Agung in the end ( it was too steep for me to go on so that I stopped at a place around 400m lower from the top), I was still able to see the gorgeous sunrise in the morning. It was pretty cold when I was waiting for the sunrise, the temperature was measured at around 12 degrees Celsius and a thick jacket is necessarily required. I felt a little disappointed that I was unable to climbed to the top ( there was about a group of 10 people but only 4 of them conquered the mountain ), but the view from my stopping point (2600m) was amazingly beautiful. The Sunrise was spectacular and it feels awesome to be above the clouds. Anyway, I really enjoy this trekking and I got my money's worth.

(9) My friend was visiting me from Australia and since we were staying in ubud and had both heard the trek was great we decided to go last minute.\n\nI had my motorbike so we figured we would just head up there for 4am. I had heard that you HAVE to hire a local guide at the bottom so I was expecting to pay around 100,000 or something for them. Wow was I wrong. As soon as I pulled into the car park I was surrounded by a bunch of guys and I told them I needed a guide and their starting price was 3,000,000!\n\nWe tried to see if we could join another group and just give them some money towards their tour but the guides harassed us. We tried to just walked up but were physically stopped and told that we were bad tourists and had no respect for the sacred mountain. By this time we had already woken up at 2:30am and driven all that way and if we didn’t head up then it would have been for nothing and we wanted to experience it so we caved and paid 250,000 each.\n\nBecause we had lost time we rode up on the bike as far as we could so we could catch the sunrise. It’s true that there is a huge line of people and it’s slow moving. I’m not very fit so that was fine for me but our tour guide recommended we take the harder but more rewarding path.\n\nWe decided to do it and push ourselves and it was really really a hard climb for me but at the top I was appreciative that we were away from the crowds in our own area. Our guide was really good after the initial nastiness about paying and was very kind and helpful in supporting me up the hill.\n\nThe view was lovely and it was a rewarding experience. So I’m glad I did it because it was stunning and I was proud to have made it up the steep path, and our guide was one of the better ones from the other reviews.\n\nIt’s definitely a tourist trap though and I was surprised at the huge amount of people, and I really didn’t enjoy being bullied at the beginning.\n\nI wish the guides would set a reasonable price list and adopt a friendlier attitude, it’s the first time I’ve ever dealt with this kind of aggression from locals. So, if you love to climb I think it’s a fun climb but you could also easily enjoy the sunrise from a cafe on the edge of the crater and save yourself some money.

(10) Excellent trek that doesn't take a whole lot of time. Magnificent views especially at sunrise. Definitely bring long sleeves as it does get cold/windy at the top. Trek is approximately 2 hours each way - it is not as easy as people make it out to be from the blogs. Blogs I have read make it seem like anyone can do it no problem - definitely not the case. I'm in decent shape and although I had no trouble getting to the top, it's not a walk in the ballpark either. Would definitely recommend for most people - not for young kids or other individuals who are not in decent physical shape.

(11) We are a couple in our late twenties who are currently doing a backpacking trip around the world so as you can imagine we’re on a tight budget. As a result the cost per person we were quoted for a guided tour of the volcano was extortionate to us so we decided to do it alone..best decision ever!! 🙌🏼\nWe drove ourselves (€2.50/day for scooter rental) to a place called Toyabungkah. Once we got there people kept asking where we were going and if we wanted a guide for €20-30 pp...we declined but you do a get a feeling like you’re being watched unfortunately. We then just looked on google maps and found the Mt Batur Car Park so chanced heading there.\nWe hadn’t been there 10 minutes before some local demanded we have a guide and said his boss was coming to speak to us etc etc. We refused and said we know no guide was needed, that it was a scam and to leave us alone. He was persistent so I then asked for his “official government ID” which I knew he didn’t have and he had no answer to this.\nWe left our bike with a lady who ran one of the stalls and gave a small tip for looking after the bike and also bought drinks off her after the hike.\nWe climbed up along the ridge, following broken/dead grass but there is a pathway up. To get to the pathway go to the temple up on the left. Building works are going on here. When facing the temple you have a fab lake view to the left, then to the right are a pile of blocks. Climb over these blocks and walk left around the temple...soon you will see the pathway and this leads you all the way to the top and goes around about to. Slippery in parts so make sure you hold on to strong rocks, etc. Didn’t take us long to reach the top coming from this part so maybe the guided tours start further away I’m not sure!\nAnyways we made it to the top with no one else hassling us and the views were incredible! We did it at around 10am so I’m not sure what it would be like earlier if you want to catch sunrise. But I’m glad we picked this time as we only met two other tourists the entire time so it was like having the place to ourselves 😁😁\nMaybe we were incredibly lucky but wanted to share for anyone on a budget that still wants to hike this 🤗

(12) Wear at least a jacket and good shoes for climbing.\nIt was 2am pick up from our hotel, the drive to location included a 20 minute stop at a roadhouse for breakfast (fried banana and coffee or tea)\nArrived at the base, greeted by plenty of locals, some selling jackets, guides etc (you dont really need either) We were given another breakfast box with an egg, bread and banana (I fed my egg to the dogs who climb up with everyone in hope of food) The only toilets are located at the base so recommend you go before you climb, it will cost 5000 Rp to use.\nYou have local guides assigned to your tour group, stay with them. They will give you torches if you didnt bring one.\nClimb up is about 2 hours and its mainly a steep, rocky narrow path, you will feel it in your legs, be careful of the loose rocks as you begin to tire. There are breaks here and there but they are not long although you can stop whenever you need, one of your guides will stay with you. At half way point there is an option to take the bike up but it will cost about 400,000 Rp.\nThere is a stop point just before the summit, if you are too tired or wont make it to the top in time it is still a good vantage point to see the sunrise, this was the coldest point so a jacket was good. They offer drinks here, hot chocolate was good!\nThere was alot of mist this morning so we couldnt see much except when the sun rose over the mountain and cleared the mist for about 2 mins which was spectacular, then the mist came back.\nThen your shown the hot vents and crater where you will also find monkeys, watch out for them near the edge, they stole my partners water bottle and opened the lid and drank from it properly, was quite the sight!\nThe trek down was just as hard, as its down the rocks which can be slippery so be careful, it turns into a paved road half way down but the steep hill gets to your legs.\nWe had an amazing guide called Moody who helped, encouraged and chatted to people the whole way, he also spoke about how he has to do this climb everyday, maybe even twice a day to support his family even though it hurts his knees, such hard work, bless.\nOn the drive back we stopped at a coffee plantation, where they offered coffee and tea tasting and a chance to try the Luwak coffee (try here as its way more expensive in the tourist areas)\nOverall great experiance, and reasonably priced at 300,000 Rp from Ubud.

(13) There were four in my party, all of us over 60 yo . We had two guides with us.\nOur climb started at the foot of Mt Batur at about 4.00am, it was pitch black, each step we took was by torch light and the path wad literally a goat track. Nevertheless we plodded on and reached the summit just before dawn.\nFor our breakfast our guides buried uncooked eggs in the ground,10mins later the were cooked from heat of the volcano. There was some cloud just below the summit but the view was still magnificent . We circumnavigated the crater, even thou Mt Batur is still an active volcano, it's been some time since it last erupted and the crater is overgrown with plant life. We made our way down a different track, goiing down was more difficult than going up due to loose rocks on the track. It was hard not to slip. The trek lasted about 4-5 hours after which we went to nearby natural hot spring pools to soothe our aching muscles, it was heaven on earth sitting in the pools with Mt Batur in the background

(14) We were lucky as we were here on a tour with Rovernuts Indonesia, who drove their Land Rovers through this beautiful Geopark which had Black Lava Sand and was absolutely interesting especially as Mount Batur which is still considered active!\nThis area has rich elements of macro and micro volcanic.\nIt was definitely an unforgettable experience!

(15) Great View point of a volcano active. Good sight seeing spot in Bali. Nice place to visit in Bali in South Kuta

(16) We climbed the mountain on 11-12 June 2014 to see the sunrise. The night trek was challenging and towards the end extremely steep - rock climbing skills are definitely needed - but as soon as we reached the peak the view was amazing. However, when we started our descent, one of us lost his footing and started running down a steep cliff which ended in open air! He tried to stop himself from falling into the air by falling down and rolling on the stones several times. He was seriously injured on the head and other parts of the body, so he couldn't walk down anymore. The guides immediately came to help us, they tried to stop the bleeding, but there was not much they could do as there was no way to help him descend the mountain. We were stuck on the top for 6-7 hours waiting for help, while he was bleeding and suffering from hypothermia and altitude sickness. After a long wait, the locals came with bamboo sticks, with which they made a make-shift stretcher and slowly carried him down 5 hours later. He was eventually saved, but the whole process took about 12 hours. So, although it is extremely beautiful and worth the trouble, our advice is to be very careful while climbing, as one missed step may cause your life.

(17) It's really recommended place to visit up north about 40 minutes from Ubud. We manage to visit the hot spring down near the lake which was really worth it. Would love to visit again and do mount batur sunrise trekking.

(18) I wanted to say thank you for your assistance my journey last week. I and my girlfriend booked the Mount Batur Sunrise Trekking and Natural Hot Spring package Through Jero BALI TREKKING TOUR SEMINYAK, everything was well done. You're give us absolutely fantastic experience, it will never forget and have told everyone about it when we back home.\n\nThe driver picked us up at the hotel in Kuta, after that we met the actual trekking guide Jero. Very professional and super organized company trekking. started at 4 took us less then 2 hours. Jero and our driver Nyoman were super nice and informative, he Jero made us awesome Breakfast on the top. Boiled egg and bananas in Natural hot volcano, very delicious. Jero was very experienced and seemed to know the area very well. To be honest we felt 100% safe during the whole journey.\n\nAfter that, went to the Natural Hot Spring as package we booked, there was awesome places, we exceed expectation. Jero and Nyuman told us to enjoying the hit of Natural Hot Spring as long as we want, we also have lunch by the wonderful views Lake, which was included of package.\n\nThe third was also awesome, Jero and nyoman lead us to coffee Luwak plan, we did see kind of herb and samples Coffees and teas. I was tasted cofee Luwak with cost 50k, it was awesome coffee.\n\nOverall awesome experiences we've had so far on Bali with Jero and we would highly recommend to book a tour with this company.\n

(19) We four boys arrived at the foot of Mount Batur at 4 AM so that we may begin a trek which would bring us to the summit, just in time for a mesmerizing sunrise.\n\nThe first 15 minutes or so were very gentle gradient, easy on the legs, and we were chatting with our trekking guide, each of us holding the torches he prepared as we made our uphill climb in total darkness.\n\nHowever, the terrain quite suddenly became considerably steeper, and after hundreds of years of volcanic activity, you would find the path rather treacherous because it was littered with plenty of small stones (or do you call them rocks?) which can make you slip and fall, even when you thought you are most careful!\n\nYou have to think twice about trekking on Mount Batur if you have never trekked before, or your legs cannot endure uneven and steep terrain over long distances. It was surprisingly crowded on the morning we went, and my and I found ourselves hastily climbing because there were so many other much more experienced tourists waiting behind us (the path, as you can now infer, is quite narrow. One misstep and you will plunge down the mountain!)\n\nNONETHELESS, the perspiring and panting were all worth it. The sunrise was SIMPLY SPECTACULAR. Once we saw the view from the top of Mount Batur, we immediately forgot how demanding the trek was, and could only immerse ourselves in the beauty and glory of Bali. On the summit, everyone was in good spirits. While taking photos, we were also having the breakfast that the trekking guide prepared for us (each of us paid 30,000 rupiah for hot tea, bread spread with banana, and a hard boiled egg).\n\nCOME visit Mount Batur for the sunrise -- you will NOT regret it! :)

(20) We were told that this was an 'easy' trek, based on that we thought it would be along the same lines as the wide, winding Versuvious path. Wrong! My husband says that in the UK the climb would have been classed as 'moderate scramble', on a narrow path over some steep loose rocks. The upshot was that I did not make the top as my fear of heights could not handle the gradient or narrow path. My husband continued to the top, but it was cloudy and therefore did not get much of a view.\n\nOur guide was excellent, but agents need to be more upfront about the nature of this trek.

(21) We booked the mount Batur sunrise trekking online.. At 1.00 AM we were picked up from our hotel in Legian and arrived around 4.00 AM, after picking up some other group members in Ubud. Arriving at the foot of mount Batur, the parking area was filled with hundreds of trekkers and guides offering their services. Since we had booked the tour online we got three guides, we were a group of 12 Trekkers. Because of the great amount of Trekkers it is extremely crowded along the way. You can't really continue trekking at one pace when the path gets too narrow. Also our guides stopped quite often to make sure the group was still together. These stops made you cool down very quickly. The path is relatively easy if you have a normal level of fitness.. It does get a bit harder the last 30 minutes or so with loose sand and small little stones making you slide easy. The trekking to the top takes about 2hours in our case, can be done faster when it is less crowded. The view at the top is very nice, especially on a bright day obviously.. Make sure you don't wear open shoes and bring a flashlight. Further you will sweat a lot when getting up (at least I did) and it is very cold at the top so bring some extra clothes to keep your warm. All in all, nice experience would be better if it was less crowded..

(22) We paid 350000 per person, there was 4people per guide. We got picked up, breakfast before the climb and the food on top of the mountain. Coffee and hot chocolate at the top at an extra 30000. Unfortunately it was clouded in and we couldn't see the sunrise, but as we hiked down the sun came out. Still worth the hike even without a view. Ask to see where they cook they eggs in the volcano steam- it's really cool and a nice spot to warm up.

(24) The hike up Mount Batur is challenging, steep and lots of loose gravel/volcanic rock, but so worth it! It was absolutely beautiful
(25) The hike up,\n\nWas a fun hike, and I kept hearing all these horror stories from others whom had attempted it in the past. It was a bit technical but doable for anyone in decent shape, the trek involves a bit of scrambling near the top, which I thought was the highlight of the climb. Oh and if you plan on doimg the hike, do it during a full moon or close to one, its amazing, imho better than the sunrise (that is my opinion as I've seen sunrise maybe a hundred times on top of mountains.).\n\nNothing was really to dangerous on the ascent... besides the steep incline; which due to how dark it can get, might be hard to judge distances for some people if they get to close to the edges of vertical drops. Really the only thing I saw that was 100% dangerous (as in death is imminent) was for those getting to close to the volcano rim at the top of the lookout as some sections of the rock/edges looked unstable/eroded and from the looks of it maybe a couple hundred meters straight down into the caldera. Descent can be deadly if you end up falling, and slipping hard but that goes with any climb/hike.\n\nI ended up hiring my own guide through a local freelance driver that I know. on arrival at the Pasar Agung temple parkinglot, had cost me about 900k for two (me and one balinese).\n\nHow long was the trip?\n\nAscent had only taken us just over two hours.... and we started earlier then the usual at 12:45 am... So we ended spending close to three and a half hours on the top of the rim waiting fir sunrise, and it was definitely cold, very windy at 3am and 4am on top, but as sunrise approached the temp continued to rise a little and the wind died down.\n\nThe descent also had only taken us about two hours as well... There were many other groups that had gone up as well, maybe 35 other people in total. We never saw but one group pass us, so dont take our time as the average as others have said, it had taken them up to 8 hours to descend.\n\nI recommend bringing\n2lt of water and electrolyts.\nHiking shoes/trail shoes boots (I wore jungle boots, they worked, but were painful goimg down on the hard rocks, lacked stability of actual hiking boots)\nPants (I wore em the whole trip, wish I wore shorts for the lower portions then switched to pants higher up as youll get sweaty which isnt fun when you get cold later on.)\nMaybe two top layers for the top.\nA blanket in case you arrive very early like we did.\n\nI recommend these but they are not required, as we and many others did the trek without them.\n\nHiking sticks (didn't bring em, but wish I had on the down hill hahaha ... )\nReal boots (for hiking as youll get better support and traction , dont do what i did and wear minimalist shoes or boots, i felt every rock, balder, etc. on the way up and down haha, i think my running shoes would have been a better choice )\nA thermos or two with hot water (not for coffee or two at first, but to help keep heat at the top under a blanket or cloths).\nA real camera, tripod and lens for night shots (i only had my note5 so the night shots are okay... but wish that i had brought a tripod)\n\nIf you are not in the of best shape but looking for a challenge, it is doable, but I recommend doimg mt. Batur first, then try this, but start earlier and take breaks often. We went rucking straight up with just a few short one min here and there to change gear and drink water. Also there are around a hundred steps at the beginning of the hike, I recommend stretching (dynamic and static) at the top of them afterward to avoid small issues on the way up and to get your heart rate in check for the hike up.\n\nI am going to do the summit in a few days, to see if there are any significant differences.
(26) My friend and I (24 and 26) did this hike and are pretty decent shape. It is a pretty tough hike on the ascent. Almost one hour of the two hours is straight up on volcanic rocks which you are navigating with a flashlight. That said the payoff of the sunrise is beautiful and the hike around the crater is lovely, although the day we went was cloudy so our view was obscured. We stayed at the base of Mt Batur which I would definitely recommend if you can as you can just start your hike from your hotel and only need to begin walking at 4am :)
(27) We have seen a lot of \bad\" reviews about the trip but finally decided to do it. Even if it's not really needed, you have to take a guide to go there - it is a great source of revenue for them and as a tourist it is our duty to support local economy...\nOur guide was really friendly and explained everything about the volcano, the region and the way of life of the people.\nWe have been lucky and saw a really beautiful sunrise (better then the one in Bromo or Kawa Ijen...)."
(28) We've read reviews about the mountain. Cant understand until now why most of the people here lied. Bad people.\n\nVery simple: if you're regular guys, like us (go to gim twice a week, my girl to Pilatis), do NOT do this.\nIf you are a mountain climber, and you want to stop being a mountain climber, then go for it. This will surely blow the wind out of your love to mountains.\n\nUnlike any other trek ive ever done (NZ, Nepal, alps), that usually are hard but good, this nightmare is hard and keep getting harder. Yes, the view is great and all, you can see what you see from the window of your plane. Yes, it is high. No, it does not worth waste a full day of your trip + suffer.\n\nYou climb 4 hours with your hands and legs, when in the first part (that will also be the last) you are lucky to fill your cloths and bags with grey dust. Amazing.\n\nThey say going down ia easier. Well, a bit, but easier than Hell is still not that great.\n\nTo summon:\nIf you are reading this, it means you should not climb it. Just find yourself a different sunrise like everybody else with brain -Bromo or Ijen or Batur or whatever.\nDo NOT climb up to mount Agony.\n\nIf i saved 1 soul by this post, i will surely get some credit points at heaven.\n

(29) After booking my holiday to Bali, this was one of the first trips I had to arrange. After looking around we finally booked this trip with Agus Bali, and Wayan Subaru, our guide for the day picked myself, my wife and two daughters (10 and 12), up at 2:30am from our hotel in Ubud.\nOnce we got to the base, we paid our local fees, 100k IDR each plus 400k IDR for our guide plus 100k IDR for breakfast (900k IDR total - approx £50) and set off.\nThe trek up by torch-light took under two hours and was quite a hike up the path and a bit challenging in places (in the dark) but our guide kept us going at a steady pace, and with a couple of breaks we arrived at the top and managed to get some seats.\nAfter a while, the horizon began to get an orange tinge as dawn started to break, and slowly it started to get lighter and lighter as we tucked into our banana sandwiches and hard boiled eggs for breakfast.\nAs the sun broke the view was amazing and we were very lucky that the weather was good and the clouds stayed away. It was cold at the top, as you get pretty warm on the climb up and then stop and wait for the sun-rise.\nEven though we dragged our daughters out of bed so early they both genuinely enjoyed it as did Mum and Dad, especially as we had a massage booked for the afternoon!\nDefinitely worth doing if you visit Bali!\n

(30) Please hike if you can got the time to. Even its just 2 hours hike, do not underestimate the Mountain. Worth the hike, and this is the shortest Mountain compare to the big brothers where you will have stay over just to reach the peak.
(31) It is a gorgeous mountain! The views are very nice. It is like 1h from Ubud so not too bad. Also ask your driver to stop at a decent lunch place there are a few there that offer amazing views of the mountain! It can be a romantic trip. Also the volcanic rock is fascinating!

(32) Weather - Check the forecast and don't book until you're confident that you'll have clear skies to take in the spectacular sunrise and views. We booked 2 days before and got very lucky.\n\nBooking - Find a tour company (there's no shortage) who will get you to the start position before 3am as it does get busy. This will probably be a wake up call for around 1am depending where you're staying. There are lots of guides and they all seem fairly similar in standard but choose a tour company which provides a guide that can speak your language and provides breakfast/tea/coffee at the top.\n\nClothing - Who would have thought Bali could be so cold! You start at 1000m above sea level so it's chilly at the beginning. I started with 3 layers and stripped down as I warmed up on the ascent. Hiking boots and lightweight breathable sporty clothing are the best. Cotten t-shirts are never a good idea as they hold on to the perspiration so when you stop you get cold quickly.\n\nThe Ascent - It's a hike that takes you over deeply rutted tree roots and rocks with plenty of knee high step ups. It's an ascent of about 700m and takes around 1.5 hours if you're taking it easy as most people do. It is hard work if you're not a super fit seasoned hiker/climber but there are plenty of rest breaks.\n\nAt the top - You'll be there around 1 hour before sunrise and you'll need to put those layers back on. There are steam outlets dotted around which can warm you up when up close. Chill out and take in the view as it lightens up.\n\nThe descent - This is tricky and potential for injuries. Knees, hips and back can take a bit of a pounding. It's slippery and steep in some places. Take it easy.\n\nAt the bottom - Drink plenty of water for rest of the day. Relax, have a massage, nana nap, look at your photos. I wore my Fitbit and had done over 17,000 steps before 8.30am!

(33) The best spot to enjoy the rissing sun is from the top of mount Batur is about 1717 m, start early from your hotel and take 2 hours hiking, will be on the top just on time to see spectacular sunrise.
(34) Most of the time it rains in Bali in the afternoon. The probability of raining in the mornings is less, but cannot be ruled out. Hence one has to take a chance in the mornings. One should reach there around 9 am and try ones luck. I am not too sure if one can see the volcano from a distance. For the best view of the volcano one has to take the trek to the mountain.
(35) Our pick up time was a little later as we were travelling from Ubud. The group was collected as arranged and taken to the base of the mountain. Our guides supplied us with flashlights and we set off along with many others - the torch lights travelling up the side of the mountain looked like a line of fire flies.\nThe walk is very difficult in places. It can be steep and very rough. Our guides were fantastic making sure we were safe and helping when needed.\nOnce at the top we waited with many other travellers. Just as the sun came up so did the mist. The filtered light through the mist was itself quite spectacular.\nOur guides then supplied us with our breakfast - eggs cooked in the steam coming out of fissures in the mountain. On the way back down we stopped to photograph the monkeys living on the mountain side.\nIt was a very difficult trek unless you were young, fit and foolish! For my wife and I we had the greatest appreciation for our two guides who were always there to assist when it was needed.

(36) Very excellent view of Mount Batur at Kintamani. We got an excellent view from the hill top. Very few restaurants are there and one such was Eco bay. The food was horrible and over prized. Except for the view there was nothing attractive. Suggest to have lunch at Ubud and then take the drive upwards to have the mountain view.

(37) I did the sunrise trekking with the help of local guides who are a lot there in Bali. Only book the day before (be sure about the weather though ,clear and no rain ) , they pick you up from your hotel at midnight like 2 am and you'll start the trek at around 4 am after having a breakfast at some local place . They'll provide you a torch for the walk in the dark. There you'll notice that like hundred people are there for hiking , so the way is crowded and as it is narrow getting up will be slow , so you have time to gain some breath! The first one hour of the track is mild and not steep ,but it gets steeper . If you usual walk long hours and have good stamina , you won't have any problem . The only thing needed is wearing proper hiking shoes and having a wind breaker for the top. Once reaching the top we waited for the sun to rise and the whole view was really beautiful. You'll meet some monkeys up there and will get close to volcanic holes and steam coming out ,,, the way down is slippery and thats why proper shoes is a must. I truly enjoyed the hike, sunrise and views and the volcanic scenes.

(38) Beautiful view of Mount Batur and Lake Batur. There is a trek to see the sunrise if you are keen. Had buffet lunch at one of the restaurants there with the mountain in the background. Need to pay entrance fee.
(39) Prepare yourself for a crowded place, is like a thousand of people going to the top. Is not hard to reach in the top and the view is ok (not so much special). I don't now if is allowed go without a guide, but for sure is completely possible go without a guide, there are so many people going that you go all the way in a line, only bring your torch, a jacket (is cold on top), starts at 3:30am, do it by yourself and avoid pay 300.000 for a tour.
(40) I started the trek from the temple so around 1000m up and the trek to the creator was around 4-4.5 hours it is very demanding on your legs and steep at times. Once at the top the views were amazing the breakfast box given to you is rather poor to say the least. But the climb down is horrid, your neck aches from looking at the floor for so long and your joint take a bashing so just be careful, also very slippy
(41) A 4 hour trek past midnight and a steep climb to the top of this active volcano left me breathless and overwhelmed!\n\nThe view at the top was one I will never forget. The climb was difficult but completely worth it! A once in a lifetime experience and something I would recommend to all those passionate for making memories!
(42) You will ideally climb it to enjoy the sunrise. Depends from where you are starting but it should take you 1.5 to 2 hours.\nOnce you reach the summit usually your guide will give you breakfast while waiting for the show to start.\n\nIf you intend to climb a few more volcanoes in Indonesia this a good one to start in order to warm up for more serious stuff later :)
(43) I scheduled a tour to walk up Mt. Batur and watch the sunrise from the top. It was a tough walk but so worth it. The view is beyond amazing. You literally walk up past clouds to get to the top and will be surprised to see dozens if not hundreds of other tourists as well. The altitude makes the walk tough. You get a workout walking up to the top and then a different kind of workout trying to maintain your balance as you walk down. I would definitely recommend wearing boots and hiking shoes--especially as it can be slippery at points. But the view makes every step and the early wake up worth it.
(44) We went on the sunrise hike, which was very nice, but utterly packed with tourists. You are essentially just walking in a file of hundreds of people making it to the top for the sunrise view. At the base there are many people hoping to be your guide. If you do not have a guide, they will heckle you until you hire someone. We reserved a guide before going, so were not bothered when we arrived. Our guide was a sweet local kid who was very knowledgeable about the area and answered all of our questions.\n\nAt the top of the volcano our guide gave us a small meal of peanut butter, bread and bananas that we enjoyed while watching the sunrise. They also sold tea for a small price.\n\nOf most hikes in Indonesia, this is a good option for those who are not advanced hikers, but are looking for a bit of exercise. The hike can be seen as challenging, but nothing compared to the other volcano hikes (like Rinjani).

(45) We started trekking at 3am. It was very dark and the path was rocky and somehow steep. We used the big umbrellas from the hotel as walking sticks, very useful and helpful. My husband had to rest a few times during the trekking cos he was panting badly. A good pairs of shoes for trekking is recommended. It's windy and cold during the wait at the summit so bring a jacket with you but you can rent one at US$5 too.
(46) why i said easiest? because the mountain provided anything for you to climb up. the road was very clear. the path was visible. and the rocks were solid for your step.\nthe best way to enter this place is from hp2gb basecamp. from there you could walk or take your ride to the temple at the foot of the mountain. for my recommendation please take your ride as the road to the temple is very far away and the road is passable by car. i was told by the local that the road wasnt very good but when i walked, the road was in a perfect condition with asphalt on it -_-\nso finally i hitchikked a truck to the top.\nthey didnt collect entrance fee but they collect what they called \uang kebersihan\" that cost you around 10k idr but you dont receive any ticket or whatsoever. i wonder where that money goes. hahaha. for local you can refuse to rent a guide. but if you are a foreigner, its a mandatory to rent a guide. but if you are experienced in hiking mountain, this mountain is very easy to track and you wouldnt get lost as the top is visible from everywhere.\n\ni hiked at afternoon so there arent any hikers beside me and my girlfriend. it was a great experience"
(47) Drove up here as a day trip, didn't do the hike. Views of the mountain and the lake were beautiful. Maybe another time I'll do the sunrise hike. That's probably the best way to appreciate this attraction.
(48) I must admit that I had been too lazy to check much about the trip beforehand. I had just heard it is an easy trek. For me, definitely not so. See further down. It takes 1.5 hours to get to the first point, and another 25 minutes to get to the peak. The sunrise is beautiful from the first point, so luckily you can stop there, if climbing is too much at 4am.\n\nWhat to prepare for: It's cold in the morning. It's much colder than at the beach; expect 17 degrees or so and check the weather forecast. When climbing, you get warm, and you don't need warm clothing, but most of us DO need warm clothing both when starting out, and at the peak: if you reach early, you'll get very cold very quickly. I had enough warm clothing, but got very cold, because I was sweaty from the climb. Wet and cold=feel very cold very fast. I heard one guy say that he should have brought a towel. I would have preferred a dry shirt, which I could then have exchanged at the top.\n\nExpect a steep climb. It's like climbing very steep stairs for about half of the climb. It's partly on lava rock and gravel, so make sure to wear at least sport shoes.\n\nBring enough water. They do sell drinks at the top, but for a steep price.\n\nCurrent price is 400K for a guide (who'll take up to 5 people) and 100K per person.\nWe left Kuta at 1am and had plenty of time. The traffic seemed smooth.\n\nThe experience: totally worth it! It's an awesome place, and it has a great sunrise.

(49) Background...my kids are super hikers...they have done 35 KM trails (17,13,11 and 9). So we had no problem doing this Mt... However we are used to open trials, few people, and not having to pay money to see nature!\nThe actual trail probably would take a good hiker 40 min to climb (one of the so called guides was actually a school kid who was on their way to school after) , however with the hundreds of people climbing it took 2 hours!!!!!! this piece of nature is basically a tourist trap, and a source of income for unnecessary guides. I can hike up any mountain in the UK or USA for price of park entry or parking. Don't need guides especially when there are hundreds of people doing the same.\nThe views are spectacular - but not when shared with hundreds of people, some in FLIP FLOPS!!!! Bring warm clothes its cold at the top\n\nIndonesia - open the mountain for FREE...

(50) We went from Amed. You can book by agency in your destination or simply contact some of the provider mentioned below. Our experiences from today:\n1. If you do so the procedure is: a driver picks you up in your hotel (in our case at midnight), brings you to the start location, mostly Pura Pasar Agung, handover to guide who brings you up and down. Once are you back, the driver still waiting brings you back to your hotel.\n2. The agents suggest usually too early departures. If you are in a god physical condition I strongly recommend to depart 2 hours later then proposed. You will avoid not necessary stops during ascend and especially waiting for the sunrise on the peak - we have waited 90 min!\n3. It is cold and windy on the top. Long pants, warm jacket, 2 layers underwear and even gloves and warm cap are strongly recommendable.\n4. If you are experienced hiker it might be even possible to go without guide as mentioned in some reviews below. You might save some money, but I wouldn't recommend it. The track is hardly recognizable at night and on some sessions dangerous. The guides are really beautiful poor people so let them earn some money.\nAll in all a good experienca for arroyng 100 USD (2 Pax) depending on your location and negotiation skills.

(51) Many reviews rate this as an easy hike. This is true if you're a hiker, but if you're not, this will be a little challenging. Our guide was well worth the investment, giving us information about the volcano, people, and culture, taking pictures of us, and basically towing one of my up half the mountain (she's not a hiker). Wear hiking boots and eat something before you leave. Bring extra water, an extra flashlight (provided, but not reliable), and toilet paper for the ladies (no bathroom at the top, but plenty of bushes). It's a 60-120 minute hike to the top, depending on your skill level. It's worth the extra time to hike around the rim of the volcano, the view is spectacular and you'll see and feel the live vents. If you're willing to wait 20 minutes, they'll cook eggs for you on those vents. Otherwise, they cook them at the main ledge using a stove.\n\nWe stayed at Baruna Cottages on the lake, and the view and extra sleep would have made it worth the stay, even if it wasn't a great accommodation. Luckily, it was a fantastic lodging and I highly recommend it!

(52) Very scenic lunch from the restaurant overlooking Danau Batur and Gunung Batur. From a distance one can spy Mount Agung through the clouds, an imposing volcano. One can still see the black lava fields on the mountain's West face from its most recent eruption. Air was cool on a hot afternoon.

(53) As a generally non-out doorsy person I was somewhat apprehensive about this trek, but it was relatively easy and enjoyable although very steep at times.\n\nWe started at three am and made it to the top in just under two hours, it was a really individual and cool experience to be walking in the darkness with just a chain of flickering lights of other torches to remind you other people exist on the mountain.\n\nThe guides you get tend to be local kids and are fantastic, they really add to the atmosphere with their jokes and chattiness and are incredible at navigating the mountain. We gave ours a large tip and as she really added to the experience and was invaluable helping us climb down the slippery bits!\n\nThe view from the top is gorgeous, but it is the experience of climbing and the other people also excitedly waiting that make this worth doing. It does get cold as you wait for sunrise but there is a bonfire and even some kids playing guitars around it whilst you wait. They also provide hot drinks for a price.\n\nWell worth doing and even fun and romantic! Tip your guides :).

(54) Mintain batur is one of favorit place to visit in bali, if you go to Kintamani you will see montain batur with a nice view of the volcano and lake batur. Many tourist also climb montain batur in the morning because from up there you will see beautifull Sunrise and also after see The sunrice the local guide will take you to visit hot spring down there.
(55) We didn't expect the temperature to be a low 14c and the area somewhat obscured by a haze. It was still clear enough to enjoy and appreciate the spectacular scenery from various vantage points known to our driver. It is still an active volcano, no tremors felt or rumbles on the day, so it seemed that the gods were happy. Mounty Batur dominates the area, two calderas at its base, the southern caldera contains a lake and the village of Trunyan which is noted for it's unusual custom of laying the deceased on the open ground and covering with cloth and bamboo while they decompose. The surrounding area has changed greatly since we last visited in 1989, I think that I preferred my visit and the rather primitive facilities that existed then .

(56) The view at the top is nice. Would I spend another 5 hours climbing it the dark with 60% of the climb being rock face. It's not a track and it's not easy. Within 5 minutes you will be sweaty, out of breath, and sore. It continues for 4.5 hours and gets harder closer to the top.\n\nThe way down is the same rock faces. You slip and fall chances are you will tumble and break a lot of bones or worse.\n\nKids under 16 I would say is a stupid idea it's not worth the risk.\n\nIt's a mountain so dress for it. Boots, trousers and t shirts. At the top it's freezing you need warm clothes 100%.\n\nOur guide was lovely she basically carried my girlfriend the last hour down.\n\nYour going to be sore after for sure. You cant give up remember. This is bali there's no mountain rescue ready to come to your aid.
(57) My husband and I are in early 60s and this was a challenge for us. But going at our pace with the help of the guides made the trek achievable.\nIt was worth the effort to see the sunrise over the horizon and to know we did it.\nTake a warm jacket for when you get to the top as it is cold alternatively pay to borrow one from vendors at the start of trek.
(58) we'd a lunch with a view of the mount. I really enjoyed the view though the lunch was so so. If u'r not a trekking person must visit this place to have lunch with the view. you'll really enjoy this.
(59) The mountain in itself is cool and you have a great view.\n\nThe locals and everyone in that area on the other hand is the most vile people I've met in Indonesia.\n\nFrom the first moment we arrived to batur people followed us and started asking when we wanted to book a guide To go up the mountain, \only 400k rupiah/person, cheap\" as this is a ridiciously overpriced we said we didn't want a guide.\n\nThis made them upset and they explained that it was the law that you needed a guide. Which is a lie.\n\nThe whole village is like one big mob family that tries to take your money on every turn.\n\nWhen we still tried to go alone up the mountain at 4am we were chased by motorcycles, then surrounded and they threated to hurt us if we didn't pay them for a guide.\n\nThis was not a good experience, it was practically a robbery and I suggest no one ever goes there so they can finally realize that you don't treat people like that.\n\nAnd this has happened many times before!!!\n\nGo to the other higher mountain (agung) instead, where you actually need a guide and it is reasonably priced."

(60) Our family of 4 did an exhilarating trek up Mt Batur to see the sunrise. We woke up @ 2 am to drive 2 hrs to the bottom of the trek. We started the trek @ 4am & reached the summit @ 6am, well in time to see an awesome sunrise. The trek itself is difficult & one has to be relatively physically fit to do it. One needs good trekking shoes to climb. There are a couple of spots to buys water or just rest a bit.\n\nWe had a good guide Wayan organised through Bali Golden Tour, our local tour operator. Our guide was good to take us to the best viewing points etc. The 2 hr trek is worth it once you reach the summit to see an awesome sunrise amidst the scenic beauty. |
