(1) This was one of the best experiences Ive had during my Southeast Asia Trip. We left our apartment at around 2 am in the morning. We booked a tour with a group of 8-11. Its better to go with someone who knows the surroundings as it is very dark. We arrived after 2 hours climbing at the top of the mountain and enjoyed the sunrise which was breathtaking. It felt to be above the clouds. Then the view to the other mountains- indescribable! Anyone who is visiting Bali should climb mount Batur before sunrise to experience greatness!
(2) nice place for holiday, not too busy and really relax view, sometime i felt very happy to stay there unfortunately only 2 days, next time i will stay more than a week to make feel better, thanks so much for my guide KETUT,I HOPE WE WILL MEET AGAIN NEXT YEAR FOR MOUNT BATUR TREK
(3) We had heard lots of different things about Mount Batur and wether we should do it alone or with a guide. In the end we found Bazir was the man to use (+62 877-6038-1082). He was lovely, patient and took us a different route which avoided all the other guides. The climb was a little tough, but only because I literally never climb, just run and lift weights.\nI can see what people mean about the mountain mafia. Although the locals we came across were lovely, some of them definitely seemed a bit dodgy. Yes its not right that you should be forced to use a guide, but for the sake of doing it properly, you might as well.
(4) You have two options when visiting the volcano, you can go there direct and hire a guide from the office at the base, or you can book it through your hostel or a local tour office which will generally offer sunrise trips. If you hire a guide, they'll offer you 3 different routes and the option to visit the hot springs afterwards where as most sunrise trips are, and prices start from 350,000IRP, whereas sunrise trips go for around 300,000IRP. Although the later is cheaper, the guides advise us a lot more people are there in the morning (several hundred), where as me and my friend went during the day, and in 4 hours, we only saw 4 other people!\n\nThe hike up there is pretty tough! Much harder than I first thought, and I was shattered for a good day after finishing the trip (up then around the highest point). Our guide showed us the 2 craters, took us up to the top, boiled us a few eggs in the mountain which were delicious and then we came back down the other side!\n\nThe views were spectacular, and be careful up there if you walk the whole way around, as some points are only 1ft wide with hundred of meters drop either side of you!
(5) It was a tough hike, but so worth it at the top for sunrise! The is the sunrise deck (the first outlook) and then the very peak is not much further, although it is a straight uphill climb. A little less people up there than at the lower outlook.
(6) It's a must do trek, it's worth loosing some sleep and trekking\nThe view up there is breath taking\nTip- get a head start - too many people, there will be no place to walk or sit to enjoy the view...\nIt gets cold up there, dress accordingly\nIt's slippery lot of pebbles, so shoes- a must...\n\n
(7) Booked sunrise trek last minute contacted Jero @ +6281904082208 we founded in his site. We were picked up in our hotel Sense Seminyak by his cousin Agung, drive safety till the volcano approximate 2 hours. Our guide is Made, he is Jeros cousin, he just excellent and cool Guide. He also, helpful and friendly, once we reached the peak, he drop us to the place where less people and we can enjoy the sunrise. We would definitely to contact them and hire Made to become our guide in future. Must do!!\n\nThanks for everything.
(8) the hike was extremely crowded!\nduring the way up it was like the traffic un ubud! always stop and go!\nThan we were stuck in the middle of the way up and couldn't go one step ahead or back! it was a total catastrophe! if there would habe been a mass panic,I guess 100a if people would have died!\nafter a long way up with a lot of stop and goes we weren't allowed to go to the top because there where already to much people!\n\nin the end it was an experience with mixed feelings! some nice some bad! I guess more than 2000 people on the vulcano but a nice view an lovely monkeys 🙈
(9) We climbed up with a family of 5, including a 10, 12 and 14 year old which was no problem. A guide is helpful as he knows the dangerous bits and pieces of the steep walk and was great in helping our youngest one. Good shoes are a must - good sneakers or running shoes will work. Flip flops will not at all.\n\nIt's an hour walk on a mostly paved path, then its gets crowded and the acent starts for about 30 minutes to a little stop area, all walking on lava stone. From there another 15 minutes steep to a second stop area. Lastly another 15 minutes to the top which is steep ans sandy so hard to find grip.\n\nIts crowded and loud at the top which is a shame. Still beautiful but I can imagine that with less people and some silence it would even be better.
(10) Started the climb at 1.30am from Pura Pasar Agung (the easier route) and took us 4 hours to the top. Offers great views of East and South Bali on a clear day and nice view of the volcano crater.\n\nSimilar in difficulty to Kinabalu, so a certain level of fitness is required.\n\nTips: Get a guide, prepare warm clothing (a layering strategy would work well), a headlamp, and 2 liters of water, and sufficient sleep. Also, it helps to stay in a nearby town like Selat or Sidemen, so that you don't have to wake up that early to get to the starting point. It could take up to 2 hours from the Kuta area, so do plan ahead and good luck!
(11) Such a gorgeous trek!\n\nI did it with a guide and a couple.\nI found it easy but the couple in their mid 20s found it extremely difficult and needed to rest every 15 - 20 minutes both on the way up and down! I am also mid 20s but it became frustrating needing to stop all the time and really dragged it out.\n\nThere were clouds for a while when we reached the top and it was quite cold so you would want to wear pants and a jumper for when you reach the top. But well worth it when the sun came through.\n\nBe careful of the monkeys as they open your bags and will jump on you if you have food in your hands.\n\nI stayed in Seminyak and had to be picked up at 1:30am and the drive back with lots of traffic was a bit painful.\n\nOur guide was nice and gave us good information and history facts.\nHighly recommend this experience to anyone thats thinking about it.
(12) Great place to visit, although I highly recommend you get there early especially if you want that “Instagram” pic with the Volcano as only 1 person will be taking the picture for you(10k) and the queue gets long very quickly. \nYou must wear a sarong and pay respect to the customs. Ie: No kissing or trying to do Yoga poses nor can women have there shoulders exposed. \nA good day trip as there is much to see there and on your way back
(13) We booked our sunrise hike the day before at one of those stand. I unfortunately don't remember the company name, but we paid 350 rupiah per person. We were told to be outside our AirBnB between 2a-2:30a to be picked up and after a little confusion of what vehicle was picking us up we boarded a bus with about 15 other hikers. We had booked our trip with another friend who was being picked up at his place and we were told that we'd meet up with him at breakfast. However, once we got to breakfast he still wasn't around and we were told that we'd meet up with him at the main base site. Once there, our friend's driver got lost so they were running late. We wanted to wait for him so we could all hike together, but our guides forced us to start because you have to hike with the people you came with in the car. Had we known that we'd get separated like that we would have easily all been at the same pick up location.\n\nOur first stop was to a coffee stand where they provided coffee/tea and a light breakfast which was a banana crepe like treat. We met up with a few other cars who did pick ups and then once we all ate made our way to the main base location. Once there the drivers handed out flashlights, breakfast to eat at the top, and water and introduced us to our guides (we had a guy and a girl).\n\nI'd say the hike was 6/10 difficulty because it got kind of steep in some places, lot of loose rocks/ash, and there are just a lot of people around. I did the hike in jeans and a pair of Allbirds, so not the best hiking attire, but someone in my group was wearing flip flops and somehow made it work!\n\nAt the top the view was amazing! You could continue to go higher, but we chose to stay at the main area because the additional climb would have taken another 25-30 minutes and by that time we would have missed the sun rising. We ate our breakfast while watching the scenery change and finally met up with our other friend!!! At the top there were locals selling hot cocoa/snacks if you wanted.\n\nAfter the sun rose, our guides took us to an area where a crater hit and showed us a place where steam was coming out of the rocks. There were wild monkeys and dogs roaming so be careful they don't steal your food/things!\n\nDon't quote me on this, but there might be an easier path for those who can't do that climb, just ask the people you book with. The path back down was a different route and a lot easier so have no fear that you'll be going back the way you went up! Once we got back to the vans we made a stop at the same coffee place we went to for breakfast and had a coffee/tea sampling that was \included\" in our tour.\n\nAfter all was said and done, we got back to our AirBnB by 9:30a-10a. It was rough waking up that early, but seeing the sunrise and that amazing view is so worth it! I would definitely recommend it!\n\nTo bring:\n-Layers to wear because it gets pretty chilly at the top with the wind and you cool down quickly while waiting around for the sun to rise\n-Headlamp if you don't want to have to carry the provided flashlight (I did this and it was so much easier hiking)\n-A small backpack to put the water and breakfast they provide in\n-Camera\n-Sunscreen for the hike back down"
(14) We arrived at 4am without a guide and with the intentions of hiring a local one incase we thought we needed one (since we forgot flashlights). Immediately a group of locals started talking to us and trying to get us to \register\" and were told it was 600,000 to hire a guide. There are tours that leave from Ubud for 200,000 that include breakfast a car and guide which I pointed out and they responded go to Ubud. It was just a disappointing experience to be yelled at by strangers because we wouldn't let them rip us off and they wouldn't even negotiate. They just yelled at us saying we were disrespecting there city and culture, by that point I had enough and I thanked them for this great experience in Kintamani and we left. We read lots of reviews before about people showing up without a guide and this was a lot worse than we anticipated."
(15) So I was staying in the quaint little dive town of Amed and thought I'd venture up the looming rock on the horizon. Of course I came immediately to Trip Advisor to check out the different experiences. After reading that it was challenging on every single review and reading about the guy from Cyprus who fell and was seriously injured I must admit there was a little trepidation in my decision. Thankfully though I emailed the tour guides and inquired on availability.\n\nThe biggest stumbling block was of course the weather. The original night I was planning to go had rain and so I postponed to the following day. There are three different climbing options available, but because I was going to start from Selat, I really only had two options: Climb the old route to the side of the crater or brave the new more challenging route and go to the summit.\n\nHaving recently run my first marathon and bolstered with that confidence I chose the summit which started at 12:30am. I met my guide around 12:15 and he kindly gave me some early morning snacks. He also asked if I had a jacket. When I responded that I only had layers he lent me a wind breaker. Make sure you bring a wind breaker as it's easy to get chilled. Also bring plenty of water, I actually went through my entire 4 liters of water.\n\nWayan (The majority of males in Bali are given this name) was a pleasure to climb with. We covered a variety of topics of conversation, while he expertly guided me up the dark mountain. Even though I had mentally prepared for a tough climb, I wasn't prepared for how the altitude would affect me. This was my first time over 2000 meters and I could feel my body accelerating my vitals to the physical demand. The slope was indeed quite steep and you had to fully concentrate on every step. The toughest part was the final push to the resting spot before the summit. We reached there around 4:30 and so I was thankful for a nice long rest before we went to the top to see the sunrise.\n\nThe view from the summit was spectacular. Words can't do justice to the picturesque panorama that lays before you. That day we were the only two at the top and I wondered if others were psyched out by the accident that had happened. I asked my guide about it and he said that it was ego that led to the fall. He hadn't been there when it happened but had assisted in getting the man off the mountain.\n\nYes the climb is arduous and not recommended for those not in shape. But for those who do make the climb, it's an experience you'll never forget.
(16) Great idea for a trek. A 2 hour hike up the mountain under the stars, using a flashlight to guide you. Beautiful sunrise over the mountain while eating breakfast, and on the hike back down there were monkeys everywhere!
(17) I did not do the sunrise climb. My climb started close to noon and ended around 4pm. It was not an easy climb. I would suggest wearing proper gear (sports/hiking shoes, long pants, long-sleeved shirt and even gloves...). We started at over 1000 m over sea level to climb the balance 717m to the peak. Initially, it was flat land and thereafter slopes. The slopes then gave way to rocky outcrops. Whilst the severity of the slopes were manageable, it was the paths which were the killer. The paths, at some stretches, were either just loose stones or sand - which made climbing and braking difficult. Our guide carried some of our items (mostly water). There is a shelter when you reach the first rest point. From here, you can see Lombok and Denpasar on a clear day. We then continued to \walk\" around the crater. Personally, I found it slightly dangerous. At some points, the path was less than a meter wide, with steep cliff surfaces on both sides. And at other points where there are no paths, you have to step slowly on the cliff surface itself. Another part I found difficult was the descend as the loose sand on the slopes made it difficult for one to walk. The fact that two steep cliff surfaces flank each side of you did not help as well! Whilst the climb was manageable, the fatigue robs your concentration/focus easily and can result in falls. My partner had a much easier time.\n\nWe paid 450,000rp each. There were different routes with different costs. A trip up and down to the mountain (most basic) costs 300,000rp. Then, if you add the walk around the crater, it would be 450,000rp. Finally, if you then descend using a different path (to see the newer craters) and to end at the hot springs - it would cost 600,000rp.\n\nThe view is very beautiful and worth the climb. But, for the not so fit, I would reccomend to just do the climb up and exclude the crater walk.."
(18) Mount Batur is a beginner friendly hike. There are occasional motorbikes offering their service to take you to the top if you're feeling tired.\nOtherwise, it's a short and easy hike for regular hikers.\nThe view from the top is great. I won't say it's super amazing like Rinjani tho.\n\nMy group paid around 340k with a local travel company. This seems to be the average price there, however for local standard, this feels a bit expensive.
(19) Having seen a few volcanoes I was not that impressed, but it was next to a beautiful lake and you do pass some beautiful areas to get there
(20) The view from the summit of the volcano realy worth the effort. We had breakfast watching the sunrise and that is definitely one of the best moment of our vacations in Bali. Don't forget to wear good trekking shoes as the trail is pretty steep and slippery sometimes.\nOur guide was Mudi (mudigoestothemountain) and we camped one night in the middle of the ascent.
(21) I would class myself as fairly fit but this hike was a lot tougher than it thought it would be. An absolute must though and worth every step. Take some food for the monkeys and dogs at the top and lots of charge on your phone to take plenty of pictures.
(22) once you get off your vehicle at the kintamini restaurant one is awestruck by the sheer beauty of the place. the ash of the previous eruption can still be seen down the slopes. lake batur and its calmness simply take you close to nature. one can zoom in with their lenses to see a village along the lake batur's far side, where the dead are placed lakeside to dessicate and not buried.\n\nweather is the key here if you are lucky enough u may see the mountain top to the right of Kintamini volcano.\n\nBeware of the Hawkers selling cheap stuff. they may get on your nerves, best is to avoid them.
(23) I was talked into this by my best friend. I had not planned on climbing a volcano but I am so glad I did. We were there in November when flights were cancelled due to ash from Rinjani so I was expecting it to be cloudy and hard to see sunrise. Lucky for us it was a clear morning. The walk in the early hours around 3.30am was very dark and the guides hand out small flash lights. I am glad I couldn't really see going up. It was very rocky path and sometimes slippery. Would not recommend if you are not active. We had a young 21yr old boy who really struggled, but a 64yr old woman who was quite fit who handled it well. The view from the top was just breathtaking. Was strange to see monkeys and dogs on the mountain. It was a nice brekkie up the top. Banana sandwiches & boiled egg. Our guide was lovely and helpful. I wish I had taken more money to tip her better. I would recommend to all active people who enjoy hikes. Good sandshoes or boots are a must.
(24) Amazing views from the top. Takes about two hours to get to the summit. Plan your visit on a clear day. The sunrise is amazing! Monkies at the top!
(25) We went there, and the road to go is simply beautiful due to the countryside landscapes.\nWhen there, we did no trekking, but had lunch looking at Mount Batur - and you can get some for very cheap price ! It is really beautiful and is a must. But we did not want to go on the lake or do the trekking as it seems it is not so interesting. For me, limit it to the view + lunch to have the time to enjoy it.
(26) Bucket list experience decided that day I would fly to Bali, booked flight organized driver and tour guide 3am at base of mountain climbing.
(27) I climbed it 4.5 years ago and really enjoyed it. highly recommendable. You do not have to be specially fit to do it and make it for the sunrise.\nI will do it again later this year with some \nBring your own water and some snacks, though it could be bought at the top
(28) It was my first. People might say it is the easiest one, but still i find it hard, maybe bwcaus it was my first time to hike on a mountain. Almost gave up but finnaly we can make it. And it is all worrh it for the sunrise view. Astonishing!! When u reach the peak, be careful with your belonging because there are so many monkeys and dogs. Be kind by bringing them food before you go up, they are so skinny
(29) We ordered this trip to see a beautiful sunrise from this mountain which actually is a sleeping volcano. At 2 in the morning, we were pickup at our villa and after a ride through Ubud we arrived at a coffee bar where more hikers were waiting for the same experience. When we finally reach the meeting point it was very crowded. The climb up is rather tough and you needs a good condition. It was that crowded that there were some climbing jams on the paths. After I did some prayers with the local guides we climbed back up. The sunrise is beautiful and is strongly depended of the weather, so be aware. The activity was much too crowded so less people all together will do well. The breakfast tasted good but fried bananas like some years before on the top was better.
(30) Every sunrise has it's own beauty & charm!!\n\nBut having to trek for 2 hours to experience one has it's own charm & a different kind of a high.\n\nThis is a must do at least once if you vacation in Bali are fit enough to accept the challenge.\n\nThe history behind the volcano & the community that has rebuilt itself & flourished in the aftermath is awe inspiring as well.
(31) What an adventure. We were picked up from our hotel in Ubud at 1:30 am. We drove 2 hours to reach Kintamani. Then we started hiking at 3:00 am, and reached the top at sunrise. It wasn't an easy hike, but it was all worth it when we saw the view from the top
(32) We were picked up at 2am from Nusa Dua and arrived at the starting point at around 3-30am. My teenage daughter and me were lucky to have a lady guide, Wayan assigned to us. We headed straight for the toilets as there are no toilets at the peak. We came prepared with headlamps, trekking shoes and a backpack with some snacks, water, rain coat, windbreaker and our cameras.\n\nAt the beginning, we were overtaken by two fast paced groups. We were reasonably fit but decided to take it slow and easy. We walked in pitch darkness for half an hour through what we later found out were vegetable plots. The trek became rockier and then started to incline. As the real climb started, we came upon the two groups of hikers who had overtaken us taking a break. It was a good morale booster for us as we overtook them!\n\nAfter another hour or so of steady non stop climb, we reached the windy top. It was 5-30am and we had lots of time to relax before the sunrise. There were a couple of huts at the top and we stopped at one where the guide gave us our breakfast, bread with jam, eggs and some bananas. There was a mother dog and her puppy at the hut and we shared our breakfast with them. We decided to stay there as the guide assured us that this place had the best view.\n\nThe scenery of lake and mountains and shimmering sky was well worth the climb. We sat there in the cold windy dawn enjoying the sunrise. We could also see the peaks of Mt Rinjani on Lombok Island. At around 7am, the guide took us round the crater and we took some shots being careful not to step too close to the rim. We went down to where steam comes out from the fissures, a reminder that this is an active volcano. We also saw a cave.\n\nThe journey downhill took a much faster pace and the guide took us on a different route. We had to be careful of our foothold as the path was steep and rocky. As it was daylight now, we could see the fertile black volcanic soil that supports the farming in this area.\n\nWe reached the starting point at 8am and was asked to fill up a form and leave a tip for the guide if we wished.\n\nWe enjoyed our climb and the experience of being on an active volcano. An experience not to be missed!
(33) This takes you to a place on the road itself, where you can see one dormant volcano mountain called mt. Batur. the view is beautiful where you can also see a lake besides the mountain. But you cant go upto that place. only see it from a distance. there are some trees and benches made on the road where you can sit and spend time watching the mountain and lake and click snaps
(34) For the fit adventure traveler this is one of the coolest things you can do in Bali. Make sure you are in good shape though, as it is pretty physically tolling. However, the sun rise from the top is absolutely unforgettable. If you think you can make it, start planning it now!\n\nYou can read more about my experience here:\nhttp://www.nomadic-by-nature.com/night-climbing-volcanoes-in-bali/
(35) We didn't hike to the top or anything but even just looking at it from a far it's stunning. We visited it while on a tour and even just approaching it you can't believe how huge it is. Definitely worth a visit!
(36) Have never seen a volcano and I was not disappointed, the scenery was beautiful. As others have said you are overwhelmed with the fact that it is an active volcano. We didn't go hiking or walking in the area just viewed the Volcano and lake from afar, but got some beautiful photographs. Ate lunch overlooking the Volcano and lake, didn't want to leave. When we got to the area our driver stopped so we could take photographs we got out to take them and were bombarded by women and children trying to sell you things (very tacky and poor quality goods), and if you show any interest then they don't leave you alone, it spoilt it for us and we didn't take any photographs at this point, they were so in our face it wasn't possible (can totally understand that this is probably there only income, but they should learn that if they kept there distance they would probably get more sales) So my advice is just say no from the start however cute the children are, we did this further along the road and were left alone. As you enter the location there is a stop point and you have to pay approx $1 per person to enter the area.
(37) The view of Volcanic Mountain is really awesome. The lake add the extra value. It is always beautiful no matter day and night.
(38) We booked Mount Batur Sunrise trekking the end of December2015 through Bali Trekking Tour Net, it was wonderful experienced we had with Jero and Team. We was contacted many companies but most of them said fully book but Jero from Bali Trekking Tour Net received our booking.\n\nWas picked up in Kuta paradiso, drive to get there from Kuta was long but Putu as our driver made our tour interesting, he told us a lot of about Bali and their culture. Finnaly we arrive at the base of volcano around 03.30 am, we meet Made and Jero as our guide. Both of them truly excellent, they are knowledgeable about area and especially about volcano. The trek was tiring but worth the effort, Sunrise was excellent while enjoying delicious breakfast. We had experiences how Jero cooked the egg and banana in volcanic hit. It was amazing and t first time we did in our life. We are strongly recommended Jero & his team. For sure we will keep in touch you trough your WhatsApp at +6281904082208 and we will recommend to everyone.\nThank you Jero and team we will definitely comeback in near future.
(39) I have had a hike at night to see the sunrise. Unfortunately, it was cloudy. Next time I would prefer to go later and walked around the entire volcano - it's worth the effort. On a night hike with a headlamp is a huge number of tourists. It is in a row one after another. You can not choose your own pace.
(40) Maginificant & Spectacular view of active Batur Volcano and Lake Batur. So near yet so far. Cool and amazing weather. Few restaurants to dine while enjoying the astounding and breathtaking views but are rather pricey and not very fantastic food.
(41) Although I loved the view when I got to the summit and enjoyed the thrill of achieving the sunrise hike to the top, it was extremely hard going. The guide had to hold my hand because I was finding it difficult to get a grip on the rocks.\n\nUbud Sunrise Hiking is a great way to do the tour especially if you are looking for private tour. We are couple paid total 90$ which come into the most affordable price for exclusive package. Breakfast at the top were cooked in the hot steam and We did have some lovely coffee before we started out climb.
(42) SUNRISE ON MOUNT BATUR:\none of the best things in bali! here's how to do it right.\nDO NOT BOOK WITH A COMPANY or guide, instead, stay at bunbulan hill hostel and have them arrange your trek for you. they will take you on a different route than the million other people doing it from ubud etc (and you get to sleep in a tiny bit later!) ..when you go with the hostel group there are only around 10 of you in total doing your route, which takes you up a side way to the first crater where you will see, then pass by, the crowds of tourists. then after hanging out while the sun rises, you continue to the further crater where your guide will cook eggs and bananas and make coffee in the hot lava holes! SO COOL. and we were the ONLY people at this spot since we booked with bunbulan hill hostel! after breakfast you will journey onward to see more of the volcano and then go around the back way and down, so you get to see the changing landscapes, volcanic ash hills which are fun to slide/run down, and finally, lucky temple, which was named for surviving the last eruption by a really close shave! do not miss this trek or this hostel, it is one of my favourite things i have ever done!!!\nnote: this trek takes a few hours and is at points moderately strenuous (loose rocks, steep angles, uneven terrain) so a decent level of fitness is recommended. not like olympic athlete level but if you live a generally sedentary lifestyle maybe take a pass on this one.\nWHAT TO WEAR:\ngood closed toe shoes ( whatever you would be comfy hiking in for hours, no converse type stuff ), light long pants (ladies i was happy in my leggings), 3 layers on top as the temperature drops as you get higher and you will get hot from the climb (tank/tshirt, long sleeve and windbreaker worked well).\ncannot say enough about this experience, check out bunbulan hill hostel and see for yourself!
(43) Gunung Batur is great! My boyfriend and I just came back from the sunrise watching and we loved it so much but please take care of the Batur maffia (aka Trekking Guides Organization PPPGB)!!\n\nWe left Ubud on our rented scooter at 3.15am and rode the 35km to Gunung Batur. It's easily doable, but take warm clothes since it is cold at night on the motorbike. We arrived around 4.15am, which is decent since you'll have enough time climbing up the mountain. You'll have to ignore ALL people who scream at you on the way that you need a guide - but the most important thing is that you won't ride into town (Toya Bungkah)!! So take the route to the 'Pura Payogaan Empu Kamareka' temple, easily findable on maps.me (which is a great and free app). So take the LEFT route at the Y-junction and stop at a big parking lot on a corner. I think it's fine to park your bike here, but we drove another kilometer over a road in really bad condition (I would not recommend this, you can't really call it a road.. More like loose and really big rocks) which is not so nice in the middle of the night with two people on one bike. We parked it really close to the temple in the forest, where we were immediately encountered by guides who wanted us to join their groups. We ignored them but kept fairly close behind them for the first part of the route which was good, since you'll get to another 'guide point' (a small shed in the woods) where they'll try to get you to use a guide as well. We just ignored these people as well, sort of pretending we were with the group, then walked through with the group (take the first path to the right) and overtook them since they were pretty slow. It was kind of nice to have them behind us though so we could be sure of the road we had to take. It was fairly easy with the help of maps.me, but we still took a wrong turn (there are quite some roads to choose from, not showing on maps.me... when you come to some benches after the first hut take the most left path) and could backtrack with the help of their lights.\n\nEvery time we would pass a guide with group they would ask us where our guide was, so we just told them they were behind us and that was fine. After this question you could even joke with them etc. The last part going up is pretty easy in navigating terms, and going down (in the light) is also really easy although still every guide will ask you where your guide is, even when you're almost at your bike again! I would recommend going down around the rim, it was so cool and there were monkeys. I personally think it would be a bit dangerous to go up by the rim in the dark though, it's quite a fall down and you won't be able to see anything of the (amazing) view!\n\nWhen we came back to the bike (which was in a fine state, we were a bit scared because of the things we read) we decided to ride around Gunung Batur, which is also a great recommendation and something you'll miss when you join a tour. When we went through Toyah Bunkah you pass the Trekking guides association (PPPGB) and a guy literally made us stop and said we needed a guide when we wanted to climb the mountain. I told him he was maffia (not the smartest thing maybe, but I was fed up with it) after which he started shouting and it seemed like he wanted to hit me, so we quickly drove on. Which is a good idea since the surroundings are great! There are really big lava fields and you'll ride inside the bigger caldera.. Seeing the crater rim of this caldera and going up it is really impressive!\n\nBut... Take a flashlight, one per person, you REALLY need it, enough water, food, petrol, good shoes and maybe a stick if you're not sure about your footing.\n\nMaybe this sounds like a real bother, but doing it on your own is really worth it! Don't let yourself be overthrown by the Batur maffia but just go!
(44) Mt. Batur is overcrowded. Hiking Batur Caldera is pretty easy and quick (~1hr) but gives a nice view of Agung and Batur/Batur Lake at sunrise with much less people around.
(45) We did the sunset walking for the long new road, where you leave at 12pm at Besakih temple. We never had done a walking like this before and it was really hard (especially downwards), but doable. The reward you get is a really nice view of the rising sun! For everyone who likes to hike or feels like trying, this is it! Downside is the material of the mountain which make it extra slippery, bring some walking stocks and a good jacket with you! Check other comments for a good guide, this is really important!
(46) But see it at Dawn to avoid the crowds and the rain , then you will appreciate the beauty of the Lake with the Caldera in the background .
(47) I loved this hike. Absolutely worth getting up at 2am to make the hike and see the sunrise. I'm in pretty good shape, a runner, and exercise 4-6 times a week. We made it up there in a little under 2 hours. If you are not in good shape, expect to take up to 3 hours because it gets pretty steep once you get close to the top. It's not unmanagable, but you will want to give yourself time to take short breaks to catch your breath. Take a big bottle of water. Your driver from Ubud should provide eggs, bananas, and a small bottle of water. Your guide will cook the egg and banana in a steam fissure. Hot bananas are SO good. NEver expected it but they are. I left Ubud at 2am and once we got to the top, I had to wait another hour to see the sunrise. So, if you need 3 hours, leaving Ubud at 2am is perfect. I was nervous about hiring a random guide once we got there. Don't be. All the guides must be part of the coop and are really nice. I do reccommend taking your own first aid kit. I gave a woman a bandaid for a painful blister. Her guide should have had that but he didn't. I packed hiking boots and they took up a lot of space in my suitcase. I almost left them at home but I was happy I had them. The trail is uneven and rocky and the added ankle support of boots is great. Take your own toilet paper. If you need to pee, there are no bathrooms on the volcano since it's a sacred mountain. You'll have to go in a bush. Oh well.... It cost me 900,000 IDR for the whole trip - 500K for the guide. 400K for the driver, roundtrip. Do it and enjoy. It's beautiful!
(48) This climb was definitely harder than I had expected. We wore trainers and had numerous layers which were removed within the first 30mins of the trek. Trek time was a total of 1hr 45 and this included two 5min breaks.\nThere are no lights while walking and the terrain is very rocky and sandy. A lot of slipping is footwear isnt great.\nWhen we reached the top, we had a 50 minute wait until the sunrise. The views were incredible and worth the early start and the long trek. It was however freezing cold, so do pack that extra jumper for your wait at the top. The walk back down is so warm though, so bring warm weather clothes too!!
(49) We visited Mount Batur in the afternoon. However due to rains we were not able to see the top of the volcano. I would suggest that one should visit Mount Batur in the mornings as we have seen during our four days stay in Bali that invariably it rains in the afternoons If one is not too keen on seeing the sunrise at Mount Batur, one should reach there around 9 AM. But I am not too sure how much can you see the top of the volcano even on a clear day.
(50) From Kuta the travel time was 3.30 hours and was an interesting drive. The volcano is an awesome sight and easily visible without and trekking. We had a nice lunch at a restaurant overlooking the volcano. There were a lot of hawkers there and were quite desperate for a sale. No problems experienced though and thoroughly enjoyed the day trip. A lot of work was being done on facilities and I imagine the improvements will enhance the visit even more.
(51) First of, before you decide to go up the mountain, make sure that it will be nice weather, otherwise you can say goodbye to the view from the top. It was cloudy at the top for us, but we still saw sunrise and down the valley. Sadly couldnt see anything in the crater. The trekk itself was great and quite easy (at least for me), but there are parts that are quite slippery, so please dont go in flip flops like some people are....
(52) The hotel concierge organised the sunrise trek up Mt Batur for my wife and I. It turned out hat the trekking company was called Pineh and at the cost of 50 USD each. Our tour rep offered the same trip for 100USD each, so be aware.\nWe were collected from our hotel at bleary eyed 1.30am and stopped off at a location near to mt Batur for a pancake and coffee breakfast before driving the last 15 mins to the start point.\nOur Guide was a chap called De (1 guide per 4 tourists) who turned out to be so helpful and entertaining. If you do take up this challenge and are fortunate to be allocated to De's guidance, you'll be we'll looked after.\nWe set off on the trek at around 3am in the dark with torch (provided by the guide), not sure what challenge lay ahead and perhaps naively thinking it to be a walk in the park. It started off that way and got steeper and tougher. My wife and I are no spring chickens, but like to keep reasonably fit. Two and a half ours latter after numerous water stops and De being a legend, we got to the top as the sun was rising. Wow! What a sight. The sun rise was amazing. We were above the few clouds that were around and the view was fantastic. In all, I would estimate about 100 other adventurers at the top taking photos and feeling jubilant. Enough space for all.\nAfter a boiled egg cooked in volcano steam, it was time to head back down. This turned out to be as tough as the trek up the volcano. It was slippery on the small volcanic lava stones, so have to be sure footed.\nIn a nutshell, the whole trek took between 5 and 6 hours. Wear trekking shoes if you have them for better grip. Many were wearing trainers and managed ok. legs ached the next day, but the trip was well worth the money and the effort. De was like a Sherpa the whole way and was very informative. Apparently, all guides have to be licensed and would you believe they do this nearly every morning for a living.\nSo recommended.
(53) Great views to be had here, shame it is all commercialised. Restaurants that are expensive and hawkers selling their wares. But, how many people do you know that have seen an active volcano for real? Last erupted in 1996.
(54) we saw kintamni and batur lake , the views are just breataking.!U must go and eat and enjoy the view ! there are alot of joints offereing that
(55) If you are in a really good shape, bring water and hiking shoes! Not flip flops!!! Its really hard, its not a easy hike!! Its not a clear steps, is just rocks... you handles but that pretty much! If you like adventure, push your body and do a lot of exercise this is the place for you!! Its worth the hike if you can enjoy... if you are from the Caribbean like me, I dont believe is worth the effort for something I can have in 15 min for home no effort!! I believe they need to make the notifications about how hard it is!! I dont mean to scared anyone, I just think is better if you know!! Its like a 1 hour going down!!
(56) If there's any way to test your fitness, climb a mountain! This was a mass climbing trek of 250 people this morning heading up to the summit of Mt Batur. We thought we were fit, but winding your way uphill at 3.30am with a torch in your hand and concentrating on your footing on loose scoria gravel was a test. We rented a rain jacket for 100K, and needed it at the top, which was wet, cloudy and very cold with a large wind chill factor. There was no magic sunrise moment this morning because of the clouds, but the simple achievement of coming back down and looking back up the mountain and seeing what you climbed in the pitch black is wonderful. The strings of lit torches saving there way up the mountain is quite magical.
(57) We did the sunrise trek like most people and ended up paying IDR 600,000 for transport, food and guide for both of us. They indicated that we would have a snack at the bottom and a breakfast at the summit. At the time it sounded like a good deal. Keep in mind we were only day number 2 in Bali. We got picked up at 2:00 in the morning from Ubud so we could summit in time for the sunrise. First off the snack was some weird chewy thing at this shack (not tasty at all). I figured that would be fine I can eat the breakfast at the top, that ended up being a huge disappointment as well. Our guides were useless. They didn't understand a lick english (fair enough I don't understand a lick of indonesian but I don't work in the tourist industry) and in no way did you need a guide for this hike. I would recommended doing one without but from what I read you don't want to deal with the mafia. There are tons of men standing around and as 1 fellow mentioned unless you are 6-8 guys you won't be going anywhere without one. I can believe that. Batur could have got a higher review from me but the negatives outway the positives for this. Which is really sad because this could be a great day trip for someone.
(58) My husband was picked up by the guide from puri sunia ubud at 2 45 am- Mt batur is 11/2 hrs away, he said the trek up the mountain took abt 2 hrs and was not too hard.It rained that day at the top,so unfortunately, their group couldn't visualise the crater. But he enjoyed the 2 hr climb and said it needs only reasonable level of fitness and is not dangerous.I did not attempt the trek since I had to look after our young kids, but the view of the mountain and lake batur was picturesque even from afar. The guide charged him abt $4500000 rupiah. He was bk at the hotel by 9.30 am.
(59) I have done day trip to Kintamani. It's very amazing. The temperature of this area is comparatively low.The view from the top was wonderful. You are advised to find out the good travel guide.1 more thing, every purchase you paid its have some commision for your guide. No wonder, that have different prices on a same item.
(60) You need a low level of fitness to get up to the view of the whole country side. You can walk the ridge of the volcano to see all the different perspectives. It was amazing. The warmth from the gases comes out in some small pockets. Our guide was good but you dont need one. Its super easy to find your way and they ask for exorbitant prices (50aud per person) plus tips.
