(1) Before starting the trek, I was looking for some useful information about the prices and other things, and I didn't find any, so I would like to share it here.\n\nFirst of all, the accommodation is expensive and the standards are low. DO NOT STAY IN SURYA HOTEL which offers the cheapest rooms for 150.00Rs, cockroaches included. The pancake for breakfast is good, but the coffee is awful.\n\nHiring a guide IS OBLIGATORY, although the trek is really easy. It took us 1,5h to get to the top. Our guide assured us that the prices are the same everywhere:\n\n350.000Rs/person for the short trek. If you are a real trekker, I certainly wouldn't recommend this one because you only get to the lower sunrise point.\n\n450.000Rs/person for the medium trek which takes you to the top of the volcano where you wait for the sunrise and than go back.\n\n550.000Rs/person for the long trek that takes you to the same point as the medium one, you wait for the sunrise, walk around the crater and wlak the other way down.\n\nAll the prices include transport, gear and a small breakfast (toast filled with banana, in Indonesia called banana jaffle and a boiled egg). Having our own transport and gear and saying that we were students, we managed to negotiate the price to 300.000Rs/person for the long trek.\n\nThe trek itself was nice, but not worth the money. It is an interesting experience to be on an active volcano where you can feel the hot steam coming out of it, but the scenery is not so spectacular. I would defenitely recommend it if it was possible to do it without the guide, but paying so much money means supporting the fact that they take so much advantage of the tourists, offering very little. If possible, choose another country to climb a volcano where the conditions are better.
(2) Mt batur, completely worth it to wake up early and go hiking in the night to assist at one of the most beautiful sunsets and enjoy a cup of coffee up there. Make sure the weather is clear so that you can see the view.
(3) We went with Bali Trekking on a hike to the top of the volcano. Our driver and guide were fantastic and shared great stories and information about the area, the people and the Balinese way of life. Although a sudden descent of thick fog into the caldera pretty much wiped out the view from the top the experience was exhilarating. One thing you should know is that this is no hike for the faint-hearted. It is a challenging two mile vertical ascent of over 2100 feet.
(4) Thanks to my driver and guide, I feel like I have the perfect experience by going early in the morning. It was beautiful and peaceful and a great way to start the day. I definitely see why people make this a stoplight in Bali. Dont forget to walk to the higher part of the area to see the view on the other side of the cliffs. Gorgeous!
(5) beautiful sunrise from the peak of mount Batur is one of the best experience in Bali, for you who love adventurous, we inviting you for try the experience on the peak of Mount Batur for Sunrise.
(6) We did a trip to see the mount but we didnt go up as my daughter is only 10 years and it requires a lot of hiking, but I will be back in a few years to do the hike.\nWe had lunch at Sari restaurant to appreciate the view and were quite lucky as we arrive around 12:30, seated at the balcony enjoying the view and around 1 hour later it was raining so much that we had to change place and the mount just disappeared.\nIts a nice trip to enjoy the view!
(7) Local trekking guide was fantastic, knowledgeable, punctual and super friendly, he is Ketut Roy the best guy i meet in Bali. Ketut was extremely helpful with the information of volcano, culture and many think of Bali. He took care of us on the way up and down. Fantastic guy which made our tour more special & memorable in Bali.\nWhen we arrived on the sunrise point, of course the sunrise didn't disappoint at all. She was a beauty. Delicious volcano breakfast completed our trip on Mt. Batur. At 07.15 am we continued the trek around the crater was excellent.\nOur driver Nyoman was fantastic too, he pick us up in Seminyak at 01.40 am, the very kind and informative, he very good English and he know all about Bali. We will very recommended Bali trekking and tour to all of my family and .\nThere will be locals who trek the way up with you in hope of returns in the form of drink purchases from them of IDR 25.000 / bottle of soft drink. Recommended to help them bough their drink one or two bottle of them.\nOverall well done organizer trek, My thanks to Ketut, Nyoman and the seller of drink\n
(8) If you choose to treck-up in the morning for surrise it is worth it, every bit.\nWord of caution: Unless you are used to trecking not advisable to the sunrise treck. The darkness and the terrain makes it tough.\nThere are motorbikes available on demand enroute if you cannot continue.\nThe return treck is better!\nThe view from the top of a fuming hill/mountain is simply breathtaking.
(9) We went trekking to see the sunrise. With 2 average difficult trekking hours, we reached the top where we had a breathtaking view.\nVery fun and beautiful\nA must to do in Bali
(10) This mount trek is great and worth waking up super early for the sun rise! You will need to be at the feet of Mount Batur at 2:45 / 3:00am.\n\nATTENTION: there is complete mafia system at the feet of the mount. You do NOT really need a guide as there are so many other people and you just follow the lights. We came alone and had no problem until we spoke to some locals ... so just go follow the lights and climb the mount.\n\nInterest / site: the mount is great and the top view is AMAZING... you can see from above the clouds... watch the sun rising above Mont Rinjani on Lombok, see the crater lighten up... don't forget to look 360 around you...\n\nPrice: if you get caught by that mafia, you need to pay 300,000 RPs for the guide... and 30,000 RPs for the entrance fee\n\nEquipment needed: take good hiking shoes and a frontal light... take something warm to wear at the top, it gets cold up there
(11) Eventhough we didn't get to see the sunrise. The hike and view from the top was an unforgetable experience. Definitely a must go for those going to Bali. Although we didn't we go with children, there were others going with them. So its a family friendly experience! Will definitely come back for more!
(12) Myself and three (aged 23 to 30) climbed this volcano february 2012. We booked via email and the whole service was great. A driver picked us up at 2am at our hotel in kuta and we began our trek at 4am.\n\nIm a rather short 23 year old female and i would say im quite unfit, i rarely exercise! I found the climb physically demanding but i think it was made worse as the three quite tall and fit male i was climbing with were simply going at too fast a pace for me. I had a few breaks, our two guides didnt mind stopping as much as we wanted - they were really friendly and spoke good english.\n\nAt one point i thought i wasnt going to make it to the top i was so out of breath, so it was quite embarassing when a 12 year old boy and his parents passed me by!!!\n\nThankfully i did go to the top and im so glad! I think we were climbing for 2 hours, it was worth it though. The view is gorgeous and the monkeys at the top are an added bonus! We felt the steam coming out of a hole in the ground.\n\nWe were not cold at any point as the walking keeps you warm, we wore good comfy trainers and brought our own water in a light backpack. The guides also have water, soft drinks and beer. At the top we were offered bananas, eggs, im not sure what else as i wasnt hungry.\n\nThe way back down the volcano the sun was quite stong so maybe bring a small tube of sun-cream.\n\nWe tipped our guides and they really do deserve it, i cant remember how much we tipped though, by that stage we were really tired. Our driver was waiting and took us back to our hotel where we had a few hours sleep.\n\nI think doing the sunrise trek is the best option, watching the sun come up on top of a volcano is something i'll never forget. Plus, its cooler at night so the trek up is easier. Im not sure i would've made it to the top with the sun blazing down on me!\n\nOn the drive back to the hotel the driver stopped at a rice field to let us take a few photos, we didnt even have to ask!\n\nOverall, i loved it!
(13) As our driver drove my and I from Ubud at 2.30am to the foot of Mount Batur to meet our trekking guide, Nanda. It was our first time trekking at night. Torches were provided for us, but I would recommend you to also bring your own torch. The trekking route was slightly challenging for me. Having to shine on the steep rough beaten route and making sure you have a good footing before the next. It took us about 2 hours to reach the top where we waited for the first glimpse of sunrise. The sight was magnificent! From the top, we can also see Mount Agung, with fits perfectly to all nature and standing above the clouds. We went further up to see the crater of Mount Batur.\n\nTo cut short this review, the challenging route up for what we can see, WORTH IT!
(14) How good this is depends entirely on the day you get. The sunrise wasn't spectacular due to clouds but all in all it was a worth while tour. The hike is quite challenging, if you have boots then great, if not, I would suggest older shoes if possible. My friend and I both ruined our shoes on the way down.
(15) very challenging hike up and down. slipped so many times and so did the other people around us. there is no easy way down, even for injured people. view was amazing and does make up for some of it. our tour guide was amazing and held my hand as i battled to climb. not suitable for children as there are lots of holes they can fall down. i didnt enjoy the hiking one bit and couldn't wait to get down and id say i am very fit! very hard terrain
(16) This place is about 2-3 hours from Kuta but a very nice view of the volcano and the adjacent lake . The more adventurous can opt for trek on the slopes of the volcano . But nothing else to do near the viewpoint and no good restaurants . You can visit the spice and coffee plantations on your way .
(17) Well second day of our Trip in Bali and met beautiful group of 3 people and a nice guide..Started from base camp at midnight..Its highly risky if you are not used to trekking as there are so many pebbles loose rocks and ashes so could get scratches too but whats the fun without all these natural things.Loved the trekking and most importantly when we reach on the top the Sun Rise which is the most special thing.Wished to trek more towards upwards but got to know its from other side so will trek another time but the experience was thrilling. And guide helped us a lot.Take water with you and snacks and some Glucose or Electrol ORS powder or juice to fuel you up.
(18) In trying to climb this volcano prior to sunrise, I had my worst experience in Indonesia. I absolutely refuse to fund the criminal activity occurring at Mt. Batur. There is no fee to enter the site nor is a guide required. A local “mafia” of sorts runs this entire small village. This is confirmed via a visit to the area itself and experiencing it.\nWhen you attempt to hike without a guide, you are physically bullied and harassed by locals. Ultimately, not able to pass as more and more goons come to assist with the multiple types of harassment. Including, but not limited to, being called a “terrorist”, being kicked, being shoved, being spat on. One even kicked my girlfriend - truly unreal.\nThey want you to pay them somewhere between 700,000-1,000,000 IDR to walk up the hill with you. Absolutely and totally unnecessary! The best thing you can do for this is to NOT take ANY paid tour. You are directly promoting the criminal activity that is going on here and entitling these criminals to continue their scheme. The stories we heard from locals would astound you, these are not good people!!\nVisiting the town is beautiful enough, but for us, hiking to the top is just inaccessible because we refuse to contribute a single penny to the thugs running the village.
(19) It was a really fun - and extremely tiring - hike. Not for the faint hearted! The last 30 minutes to the top are very challenging because of the slippery sand and the steep incline, and also because there are so many people around that you can't really stop to rest. The views (and the sense of accomplishment!) when you reach the top are worth it, though, in my opinion. Our guides took us the long way down - we hiked across another couple of peaks - which took another 4 hours (so the climb was 6 hours in total). That was really tiring as well, but very very fun. I wouldn't REPEAT the experience, but I would most definitely recommend it!!!
(20) I booked this through Ubud scooter, strange isn't it that they booked and it turned out to be the best value of everyone's offer. You don't need a private individual trek or just the 2 or a few of you. Just join a group and get the best value. You meet more people this way.\n\nI landed at 1230am got out a 1 am and my pickup to my hotel to Ubud was right there waiting, 50min later(will be much longer in peak hour traffic) I was checked in and took 10 mins to get ready and the driver was ready just on time to pick me at 230am. We drove for about 1 hour to reach Pinet Trekking and had a light Banana crepe and hot tea or coffee, we left for the trek to meet our Trek guide at 4 am given each a torch and off we went. At 550 we reach the top 1717metres, it's hard at parts and you got to have a reasonable fitness to enjoy this, otherwise you can also easily twist an ankle. Good hiking shoes are recommended but some of the guides are in flip flops. Our guide made us a simple cooked breakfast out of hardboiled or steamed eggs from the volcanic steam coming thru and a banana sliced sandwich which I took with relish as I knew I'm going to need the energy as the hike down seems longer than the up. We reached the carpark at 850 am where the driver was waiting for us to send us back, I reach my hotel at 940 am. So good timing for me to spend the rest of a great day celebrating Xmas with the wife. She was not in good health for the trek that day.
(21) Beautiful views of the mountains.\nYou can hike it, Would recommend hiking to sporty people. If not you can stop by at the edge of the road to view and take in some beautiful views and some great pics.
(22) We walked up at night (after a rather difficult 1am pick up from Seminyak!) and then had breakfast at the top to watch sunrise. Part of the breakfast was hard boiled eggs cooked under the ground on the top (Batur is a volcano) which was cool. We then walked the ridge and went down. You need to be quite fit to do this, but it's well worth it. One of the best things we did in Bali.
(23) If you want to relax after the long day of walking around in this village, Lake Batur is a great spot. It has a very wonderful view of the mountain and kintamani highland and boats aside from the lake. There are benches where you could sit and relax. Seen people were waiting for the boats to dock for a tour around the lake. Local people here and there, selling souvenirs.
(24) This is a big park with many things to do. There's the actual lake to take a boat cycle around. There's a bigger complex to just walk around and enjoy the mountain and water view. \n\nIt does get busy about the photo taking opportunities, esp since everyone is on a schedule in their tour to hurry on to the next park attraction. \n\nIf you can spend half the day here to relax and take things slowly it is scenic and reminds one of a fairy tale place. It's one of those places, where the clouds pass by the mountain and they all seem so close, then you have the water, and you are just waiting for a theme song and movie credits to roll along. \n\nThere's two restaurants in the area, washroom pay small fee, and tons of shopping stalls outside. So there's enough to keep one stay and try to chill. \n\nAnother tourist spot in Bali, that is truly encouraging to just take it easy and saunter and enjoy the sky, water, air, and appreciate nature.
(25) That's what Balinese say to the tourists and it's absolutely true. During our one week stay in Bali we visited a lot of temples, beaches, natural parks but that volcanic climbing on our last day was worth it the most during our entire stay. The view over lake Batur at sunrise is just spectacular and on a fine day you could see Mt. Agung. Next time you are in Bali don't hesitate to do this trip.\n
(26) This place has a beautiful lookout and you can get some great views of the volcano. Be warned that as soon as you stop there are very aggressive sellers who will bagger you and follow you around so be ready to walk and ignore. I did get some lovely pictures from an old man who makes them from volcano ash
(27) My friends and I did a night climb at Mt Agung on 16 July. We were very lucky that the weather was good that day. As we are amateurs, our guide recommended the easiest route which started from Pasar Agung (1525 m high above sea level).\n\nAccording to our guide, this is from south east side of the mountain and takes around 4 hours ascend and 3 hours descend and the altitude reached is 2907m high (crater rim only). We paid 700,000 rupiah in total for our group of 4 people. Our guide is Wayan, as recommended by many other trekkers on Tripadvisor.\n\nWe began the climb at about 1.45am. The terrain was very steep, inclined at about 45 degrees. When met with areas of muddy soil or lose gravel, having a climbing stick would be very advantageous. We reached the midpoint at about 4.15am and rested for 15mins before continuing. At this point, it is possible to discontinue if you are experiencing difficulties. Members who stopped here waited until sunrise before they descended with a guide.\n\nThe next part of the climb was even more challenging, because more rocks and less soil were in the way. The terrain seemed to be steeper and the wind was colder and stronger. At about 75% of the climb onwards, we must climb with our bare hands because the terrain was only rocks. My friends and I felt that the terrain was about 60degrees steep nearing the top. Finally, we reached the top at about 6.05am and waited for the sunrise at 6.24am. The view was magnificent because we were above a sea of clouds with the sunrise in the backdrop. The temperature was about 5 degC at the summit. We had breakfast before descending at about 6.50am.\n\nThe descend was extremely dangerous because a careless slip would cost you your life. We had a lot of phobia for the steepness. Hence you need to be calm and have good balance and leg strength. We reached the starting point at about 11.25am.\n\nConclusion: This is a very risky activity. Both uphill and downhill journeys are highly arduous. Do not carry on if you are not confident because you might lose your life.\n\nDo:\nTrain well and be fit\nBring warm clothing (5degC at the top)\nWear jeans/trekking pants\nBring gloves (very handy when near the top)\nWear trekking shoes (good grip)\nBring enough water\nBE MENTALLY PREPARED!
(28) Batur is a dreamland volcano the best thing to do there is go in a restaurant and relax and hear it's history it erupted in 1995 and there is a black spot on it. it's really good you should visit it .and not only batur is good the lake is also very pretty and small houses beside it. It is seldom covered in clouds.
(29) My husband and I decided to get up early and see how the sun appeared behind the horizon, perfect decision. It took us 3 hours to get up with a great guide named Jeremy and we stayed for 3 hours as we brought our own breakfast. The view was incredible and those things are worth it to get up very early. The hike is not too tough but take some breaks to relax and enjoy the view.
(30) I like natur and mountains (and I dont like heeps of tourists). I was 4 months in NZ and hiked a lot. People told me that there will be many people on Mount Batur for sunrise but nobody told me that theres a line of people from the bottom to the top. It was a bit annoying that you have to stop quite often because people block the way when they take a break. For everyone who does some sport from time to time, its an easy walk. I would recommend hiking boots (to protect your ankles) but you can do it in trainers as well. The view from the top of the mountain is nice and Mount Batur is a must-do in Bali!
(31) Summary: worth the time, money and effort - stunning view.\n\nRecommendation:\n- get fit beforehand: i would not recommend it to people who are not fit. It is probably doable but the descent can become very dangerous if your legs are not fit and you get tired. You are likely to be out of breath, no matter how fit you are. It is non-stop uphill walking and a bit of climbing on your hands and knees towards the summit.\n- get a guide (i am adventurous but it is just plain dangerous to do it on your own, despite some recommendations - there is no obvious path you can follow on your own). Avoid the tours in cities like Ubud as the prices there are insane. You can find your own on trip advisor (this is how we found our amazing guide), at a very reasonable price. He carried a lot of food for us (though we asked him not to but he was just too helpful and kind - and he knows better anyway).\n- clothing: it is chilly, not just on the top but for most of the climb as well. You will need layers and layers, a waterproof jacket (you might not use it but it is unpredictable), gloves (!!!), perhaps a hat. It was around 5 Celsius on the top but since you probably want to spend a bit of time there to soak in the view, you will need all those layers.\n- must: a head lamp. Your guide may or may not provide you with one. Torches are not great as you might need your hands to hold onto those rocks.\n- food: your guide will probably provide you some snacks, no need to carry any food anyway, just have a nice meal the night before. Do carry water with yourself, some guides insist they will do it for you but we finished over 8 litres among the 4 of us. The only thing I would recommend are the energy gels. They might come handy, especially downhill when your legs are getting tired. Descent is long and more dangerous than ascent. So make sure you stay hydrated and energised.\n\nIn case anyone needs a guide:\n0852 3854 8412 - his name is Nyoman and I would recommend him. He climbs Aging 100+ times/year on average!\nread ithis description beforehand. It really has everything you will need to know:\nhttp://www.travelfish.org/blogs/indonesia/2013/05/20/how-to-prepare-for-climbing-gunung-agung/
(32) Start at 2am. Trekking was so much fun. Though it was not easy climbing upscale. It takes me 1.5hours to reach the summit. Upon reaching the summit the view is so magnificent. It took my breath away. Makes me forget all the tiredness. It's so worth the effort. The clouds seems to float fight in front of you. It's very cold up there. A jacket would definitely be great. Getting down was another effort. Seems easier than climbing up but it's more steep and slippery. Nonetheless it's worth. Make sure try this while in Bali. It's 1,717m above sea level. I'm sure to do it again when I visit Bali.
(33) You have to put 'climbing an active volcano' on your lists of things to do while in Bali. It was such an amazing experience. I went on this trip organised by Rio Bali tours.\n\nKintamani Volcano is 1717 metres tall and quite steep and rocky in places, so you need to be of reasonable fitness - I was certainly struggling at times! Good shoes are also really important - I did survive in plimsolls but they were far from ideal!\n\nOur day started at 2am and it was a 2 hour drive from Kuta. We were climbing in the dark with torches which was a bit of a surreal experience! I think it took us an hour to reach the 'first top' and then another 30 minutes to reach the very top. This was where we watched the sunrise from which was amazing.\n\nOur guide brought us a boiled egg each and a hot banana sandwich which was cooked in the volcano steam. It's a shame we didn't actually get to see the cooking though.\n\nIt's important to layer up because it gets much colder than you expect. You get hot when you're climbing but it gets colder towards the top and right at the top it is really cold!\n\nSuch a wonderful experience - I thoroughly recommend it! Swing by the Hot Springs on the way home to relax your muscles!
(34) We was picked up at 01.40 in Seminyak, we arrived at the starting point an two hours later. Our trek was difficult but not too bad. The landscape was wonderful and sunrise was excellent,\n\nOur guide Made was great, he is very well english and he know what i need on the volcano. Putu as our driver just excellent, he very well driver and he very friendly. I would recommended bal trekking and tour to every one!\n\nOur guide, Mangku, was a wealth of information. He taught us all about the mountain and it's importance to the Balinese culture, the geography and the flora and fauna.v
(35) I am not in the best of shape and was worried I would make the group late for the sunrise, but I think some others in my group were appreciative of the slower pace. We made it in time and the guide was really great. It was very cloudy our morning at the top, but with a little patience the wind blew the clouds in and out and offered some great pics. On the way down I had already forgotten about the torturous climb up ;). I think it was good we did it in the dark! Would recommend a headlamp if you have one handy. The flashlights we got were fine but it is nice not to have to hold something extra, same goes for your water bottle. Definitely nice to have a free hand when balancing. The views were beautiful and the steam/heat of the volcano was impressive. Not sure of temperatures other times of the year but for a December morning it was nice to have a dry, long-sleeved pullover, pants and a hat. Careful on the way down, the loose rocks and dirt can make it slippery. We were in tennis shoes and did okay though. There were drinks available for purchase at the top and our guide made softboiled eggs and steamed bananas for us. Enjoy!
(36) Experience the awesome beauty of an active volcano\nClimbing this volcano was an amazing experience. Starting in the dark of the early morning, if you're staying in Ubud don't miss the Mt. Babur Sunrise tour! You have to wake up at 2:30am, and yes, the 2 hour hike in the dark is a little tough (although doable as long as you are reasonably fit). The view from the top is completely worth it! And the scenery hiking around the rim is gorgeous. Keep in mind that it's cold at the top though! Bring a warm jacket and something to break the wind! Also make sure you wear decent shoes. After we did ascend to the highest peak and crater for a glorious sunrise and stunning morning views, we had breakfast on tea and eggs boiled in volcanic steam. The surrounds were unbelievably beautiful after sunrise. Dont leave Bali without doing this climb.
(37) We took a package for IDR450,000 each which includes a pick up from our hotel in Ubud at 2 am, drove 1hours to a stop off for a 1st breakfast of coffee and banana pancake (2nd breakfast of boiled egg, coffee, and bread after sunrise), another 45min drive to the foothills of Mount Batur. This also included a guide up and down the mountain, and drop off back at your hotel.\n\nThe hike is relatively easy if you're fit and able. We didn't break a sweat because of the cool winds at night and the pace was painfully slow (up & down). This was because of the amount of people visiting at the time, there were traffic gams on the only route up and down.\n\nThe view was absolutely worth it, watching the sunrise over Lake Batur and Mount Ranjini in the distance.\n\nThis is a volcano and we were not told how dusty it was going to be. I would suggest a mask and sunglasses is a MUST. Good walking shoes too. A windbreaker jacket for those minutes waiting for the sun to come up.\n\nWe felt like we didn't really need a guide for this, but as everywhere in Indonesia, we know that by taking a guide we are providing jobs to the locals which otherwise would have to find other means.
(38) Really nice experiense hiking the indonesian jungle.Although the path is not marked and difficult to find, especially during the night. The ground is not stable and very steep ,so you must be very fit to enjoy the hiking. The besakir route its 80% in the forest..and starting from 1200 m.The distanse according my gps is 6.16 km to the peak 3065.(2 different gps devises.)The view from the peak is spectacular, definitely recommended.
(39) This is worth visiting especially if your driver or tour guide can point out the features around the crater. Prepare to be approached by lots of sellers.
(40) The view is amazing, combination lake, mountain and the green forest surrounding. Much better at midday time to this place, become cloudy if we come early or late day. Before to here, do different tour, see a Barong dance, workshop of jewelry, painting, wood carving, temple, traditional processing Luwak coffee and lunch time with a Batur volcano view. I have been trekking early morning start from Ubud 03,00 am Sun rice so nice, after trekking rest at hot natural water just in the button of volcano area.
(41) The climb was in spite of the mass tourism (we ourselves are part of it) fun and is also fur untrained manageable. Having reached the top the view is really wonderful. Those who own functional wear should bring it with, it will make sitting after sweating more pleasant. The total experience was a little diminished due to our guide. He tried to force us to give him a higher tip with some weird stories (all Germans had given him not less than 400k Rp, some of them even 50€). He talked about nothing else than tip which was not only annoying, it even made us feel a bit uncomfortable. But I guess we only had bad luck, the other tourists we talked to made only good experiences with their guides. So because of that and because of the view I would recommend it.
(42) it was a great experience at mount batur. good weather and the view is perfect while having lunch. but, the lunch buffet at the restaurant is pricey. highly recommended!
(43) Well first of all, prepare well for this trek. As the shorter route was closed due to prepration of a ceremony at the temple where it starts, we had to take the longer one, which takes 5-6 hours to the top of Mount Agung. It start in lower altituted, so you have to fight with more altitude meters. This is quiet exhausting, so if you plan to take this route, be sure that you have a good physical condition. The longer route is aproximately 1700 altitude meters and that makes you sweat. Second of all, dress warm as it gets really really cold up there. I would go for serious thermal underwear, and serious treking jackets, as well as shoes. While going the longer route you get up after 4-5 hours of treking and have to face one more hour of climbing (you have to use your hands on some parts of the way up), with temperatures way below the beach temperatures. Take also your own water. The guides take water with them, but of course they can´t take up 20 bottles for the group. So make sure to get your own 1-2 liters in your backpack as well as some energy bars. But getting to the top is worth all these. We were the only one on the top that day - the feeling that you didn´t give it up when your brain had problems moving your feet :) is just fantastic :)
(44) Awake at 12:30am and out of the hotel at 1:15 May seem crazy for a holiday, but the experience and the view is absolutely worth it. If you are reasonably in shape you will be fine trekking this volcano. The hardest part of it is the sandy terrain. There were locals walking up in flip flops to sell soft drinks at the top. Other beverages and food items are available for sale and if you book with a tour you will be provided a basic breakfast at the top.\nI booked this tour through echo bali and found them disorganized and I was not pleased at all the wasted time getting started. I am a proficient hiker and would have had no problem forging ahead and getting to the top in the dark, but after waiting 45 minutes for a party to come from their hotel at 1:15am, the time spent sitting at the base and the multiple stops with my group, we watched the start of the light emerging from the slope of the volcano. Don't get me wrong, it was still breathtaking - but I didn't expect so many delays.\nThe guide was knowledgable, spoke good English and was fun but seemed impatient with the slower people in the group. If I were them I may not have been pleased. At the end, when payment was due - we had to wait at the restaurant where we picked up the guide for the bali echo worker to arrive because we had alternately skipped him when we skipped the first part of the trail (maybe because we were delayed with the hotel pickups perhaps). While we were driving back, our driver received a call that the worker forgot to collect for the transfer and that we had to detour through Ubud to the office as we can not just give the money to the contracted driver.\n\nAll in all - I still rate this activity a 5/5 but would opt to use a company other than bali tour.
(45) It was a very tough climb for me. My teammates were walking briskly ahead of me and I am sure they had a good time. I am here to recommend my guide Gung Bawa who is a kind, jovial and extremely patient guide. He encouraged us to be positive, optimistic and 'to enjoy each step' up the holy Mount Agung. The hike turned into a climb towards the summit. I was stuck twice but Gung was there to guide me along the way.\n\nGung provided snacks and drinks and upbeat stories to entertain us as we walk. He even lend me his windbreaker at the summit. At the crater, he made us pancakes and coffee. His pancakes were delicious. He reminded me of Bear Grylls of Man Vs Wild, climbing mountains and cooking breakfast.\n\nThe descent was difficult because my legs lost strength towards the end. The path looked never-ending. The loose gravel were like marble under my weak feet. Gung was there to support me at the weakest points and I also made good use of the walking stick he provided us.\n\nI am not a hiker or a mountain climber. At many points of the climb, I thought I would fall backwards into the clouds and die (haha drama queen). I think Gung helped a lot by giving me psychological support. By making me believe that it is all in me and I can determine my outcome if I put my mind to it. I am thankful for his encouragement.\n\nI vow not to climb another mountain again but I highly recommend Gung's guidance because he is the best.
(46) Me and my boyfriend climbed Mt. Batur on Sept 12, 2012. Beautiful, not a single complaint about this adventure. Here's my advice for attire - dress in layers and dress warm. I wore a base top layer, layered on my Burton fleece and brought a mountain hardwear windbreaker just in case. For my bottom, I just wore my Lululemon Wunder under and hiking shoes. We also brought our head lamps which were really helpful. Even though your guide would probably have it, I much preferred being hands free. It was really cold at the top and even with my base, fleece and windbreaker, I was cold, maybe because it was quite windy. But by the time we descended, it got hot and stripped down to only my base layer. I can't emphasize how important proper hiking shoes are. The investment is totally worth it.
(47) Very beautiful place, with remnants of vulcan's ashes around. Nice view on the lake and surrounding. You can hike by yourself or to join a group, but make sure you have enough water, food, warm clothes and very good shoes- you'll need them especially when descending back from the top.
(48) The experience was absolutely memorable. It encouraged us to come back to Bali and climb the other mountain too. It was early but me and my husband enjoyed the trekk up to the mountain. Our guide was very sweet and knowledgable. Once we reached the top, it was a bit chilly but it was worth while because once the sun started to rise it got warmer and in front of us were those stunning views.
(49) Highlights of Ubud Tour. Although we didn't do a trek up to the top, we still enjoyed the beautiful view of Mount Batur and Kintamani lake on a bright sunny day. Also enjoyed some local fruits like passionfruit, mangosteen from local shops. Not to be missed attraction on Ubud tour
(50) Amazing discovery by NIGHT, but please be sure you bring some Balinese friends or better, a Balinese community with you :) Well, that was my adventure in a hefty night-trekking ever. It took us eon to endless climbing up and descending down with the help of torchlight and lighters sometimes. No point of counting the dirt steps, slippery broken pavements, crumbling pathways, and rusty supporting steel grips if any just move forward along with those elderly men and women that wore beautiful traditional attires from head to toes and carried heavy offerings, effigies, flowers and incenses. Persistence and patience. Well, somehow I managed through the mist, drizzling rain, and gusting cold wind. Just say Ohhhmmm..... and move on. Whatever the reviews stated, they were totally correct but minus the crazy monkey in my case :) Night trekking was truly amazing experience to remember in my lifetime! You rely on all your 6 senses (not just the common 5). You feel tingling sensation of your soul as you might hear many strange unearthly noises. You might sense fine hair standing behind your nape as the holy and not so were scattering in darkness. Some were just observing… Trust me, I am a psychologist ☺\n\nRating:\nAdventures \t\t 10\nClimate \t\t 10\nPoint of difficulties \t 10\nThe unforeseeable \t 10\nAngry monkey seen 0 (maybe they were full asleep)\nCommunity \t\t 10\n7 temples in total if you start from Penataran Agung Temple (pictures). I thought were 7 or 8 unless I felt half-sleep, not like those monkeys. \n1700-1800 staircases in approximation, uneven abstract steps \n\nYup, I was in traditional attires also but looked so completely dishevelled as compare to the elderlies when I reached the highest temple in Mount Lempuyang. \n\nI thank the community of Munduk, a magnificent village close to Singaraja. I am truly honoured to be embraced and being shown the meaning of Niskala and Sekala (the seen and the unseen).
(51) One of the highlights of my recent trip to Bali, the hike up Mt Agung started at about 2am from Pura Pasar Agung and took almost four hours to reach the sunrise viewpoint. The view of the sun rising was magnificent, we could also see Mt Rinjani in the distance. The guide was helpful and friendly, a pleasure to have. All the other guides were also friendly and helpful. Good workout, and bring a stick which will help a lot.
(52) First of all let me say the hike up the mountain is difficult - you start at 4am and if youre in Uluwatu or Pecatu area, you get picked up at 1am to make it the mountain in time. Our guide Wayan was arranged through Jegeg Tours. There are several stopping points throughout the hike so you can take a break. There are going to be a lot of other tourists on this hike, but once you get to the top - it is worth it. Basically you forget how hard it was once you see the view of the sunrise. Wayan took us to our own little spot and even took some nice panorama pictures for us. We are fresh eggs cooked in the volcanic steam and drank hot coffee at the top of the volcano. If you do this tour it will definitely be the experience of a lifetime. There are blankets of clouds and the pictures you will get to take will make up for the fact you will be sore from this hike for three days after. For perspective, eat in Kintimani after the hike so you can see the volcanic crater you hiked. I can not recommend this hike enough.
(53) The view is great. Worth the effort spent in planning.\n\nOnly disappointment was it was not an active volcano as it is hyped on internet. There are some outlets of mild steam coming out of mountain at few places. No one can boil egg with this steam. Mild enough to create a mist on your glasses :).\n\nWe traveled to Bali in Aug with two kids 11 and 4. Climbing active volcano was in our list.\n\nTo save on our/kids sleep, we planned to stay near Lake Batur. It was a guided tour. The service was excellent.\n\nThe driver pick us from Kuta around 11 am. We reached Lake Batur in the evening since we were taking break at all the small villages on the way. Each one is famous for some or the other handicraft. It is worth spending time in these villages.\n\nThe guide picked us around 4 am from the hotel. We reached the top around 6:20 for the magnificent sun rise and Lombok island view. Very beautiful...\n\nBTW go to Manali, India if you are interested in hot springs. In case you are interested in active fire coming out of mountains, visit Jawalji temple in Himachal pradesh, India. It is a place of worship for Hindus.\n\nPreparation: Head torch is very useful as there is no path/steep path/broken path to climb. Travel light. It is a easy hike. No guide is required though they insist to taking a guide. For first time hikers, guides are must.\n\nTip: We were able to get a potter to carry our 4 yr old without which this hike would not have been possible.
(54) A great place to check out Kintamani Volcano from the edge of the volcano.\n\nJust don't get hooked by your taxi driver to go into the restaurants as the one we went to was overpriced and horrible apart from the view.\n\nWe walked through a series of market stalls along the street with the impressive view in the background. We bought some wraps and had fun bargaining with the locals who were offering carvings, wraps, fruit and trinkets of various types.\n\nCheck all the stalls before you buy as the prices vary substantially depending on how you can negotiate.
(55) This is a brilliant adventure for those who are physically capable of climbing a mountain for 1.5 hours --- the experience of walking in pitch darkness followed by the wonderful sight of the sky lighting up from the rising sun through the mist and clouds is just magnificent. The walking guides are patient, friendly and careful, and are also very knowledgeable about the various geographic and historical aspects of the volcano. Well organised and conducted (the cost of AUD$110 was a bit steep but this did cover the overall total bus tour and walk time of 10 hours)
(56) A crazy morning - getting up at 1.00 and leaving hotel @ 1.30 AMand having a coffee and pancake at 3 AM before starting! The goal the Kintamani (Mount Batur).\n\nEveryone started climbing, with the torches in hand and accompanied by a guide . It was cold compared to rest of Bali, and the climb was gradual. Some people walked fast, but then soon the steeper ascent began and everyone was slow, and years of accumulated fat slowed down the progress. I was panting, rested a while and again started climbing. The guide was not only helpful, but timed the climb well. We were up on the mountain top well before the sunrise, which was at 6.15 that day. We then saw the LAva from the eruption in 2006 and some steam coming form some of the crevices.
(57) Beautiful views of the mountain. Really enjoyed the lunch at the restaurant over looking the mountain. It was a delicious buffet meal.
(58) This climb was difficult! I am not a fitness freak but I'm also not unfit and I found this walk hard. There was some very steep sections with loose rock so it made for a very unstable walking track. The guides were incredibly helpful and were constantly making sure we were ok. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see the sunrise as it was too foggy but, the fog did eventually lift to reveal a gorgeous landscape. Do this walk only if you feel you are fit enough.
(59) No one tells you how hard this is until you are midway and dying !! Its a good trek but one needs to be fit to get up to the top to see the sunrise on time. The terrain begins easy and then gets steep and full of lose rubbles which makes it hard to climb up. Its also hard to climb down. But overall its a good experience as long as you are fit and have a comfortable pit of hiking shoes.
(60) There are two main routes up the mountain, one is difficult if you're not brave or fit and the other is more difficult. I went for the easiest route from the temple.\n\nStarted the climb about 1am and made it to the summit about 5:30am including some breaks.\n\nI wasn't really sure what to expect, hadn't done any mountain climbing before. A couple of people didn't make it because either they weren't fit enough or they got scared on the last hour of the climb.\n\nThe whole climb is quite steep and tough, first through trees and then rocks, but the last hour of the climb is pretty dangerous. I'm definitely a seeker of dangerous things to do, but the fact that there was no briefing, no warning, no safety equipment at all... was a bit shocking. I was unprepared in shorts and a pair of Vans, I just thought I'd be cold. However there really is some climbing to do at the top and IF you fall, you will be hurt or killed in some places. Adding to this, it was cold and wet because we were in a cloud and it was dark.\n\nAll of that said, it was amazing, the best thing I've ever done, I think I felt a bit sorry for the people that didn't make it due to what I mentioned above.\n\nDefinitely take a good pair of shoes, and a jacket and zip on trousers for the summit. A pair of gloves would of helped for the top as well as the rocks were freezing.\n\nGreat trip.
